MARY CAIN AND DEVIN KING CONTINUE TO IMPRESS

The last three weeks have been a mixture of an indoor build up to the New Balance National championships at the Armory in New York the second weekend in March, a number of State meets and the Brooks Invitational in Seattle. Plus some good early season outdoor performances. But it was Mary Cain, with just one race, capping one of the most unbelievable series of marks covering one month period that stood out. Running at the Millrose Games in the Elite mile she finished second to Sheila Reid of Canada, running 4:28.25 to set both American Junior and high school records as well at the American Youth best. Cain had the old records at 4:32.78 set earlier this year. She also ranks No. 6 on the all-time U.S. list.  Combining indoor and outdoor competition she is the No. 3 world junior and the American junior and youth record holder. Enroute Cain also broke the 1,500 indoor records with a 4:11.72 taking down her own marks of 4:16.11.

The Brooks Invitational in Seattle, which has no field events but some of the best races of the year, was highlighted by a matchup of two of the best indoor hurdlers of all-time. Dior Hall of Washington (Denver, Co.), who stunned the running world two years ago as a freshman with a legal 13.18 (albeit at altitude) for the 100 hurdles, was matched against Sasha Wallace of Castro Valley (Ca.), who was the 2012 outdoor national leader at 13.33. Last year Hall, who is eligible for the World Youth championships, ran 8.19 for 60 hurdles for the second fastest time ever run and then improved to 8.17 this year. Both times were at altitude. Wallace had a best of 8.24 at sea level. In the final Wallace edged Hall, 8.18 to 8.24. Hannah Cunliffe of Federal Way (Wa.) was third in to 60 dashes at 7.38. In the mile, run over the 307-meter oval, Anna Maxwell of San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, Ca.) was third at 4:47.37 followed by Rebekah Topham of Griswold (Ia.) at 4:48.66 and Maddy Berkson of Classical (Providence, R.I.) at 4:50.50. Sophomore Alexa Efraimson of Camas (Wa.) was the first Youth runner in the two-mile finishing third in 10:15.82. Madison McLellan of The Woodlands (Tx.) was sixth at 10:22.23 and Jordan Colter of Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Co.) was eighth at 10:29.25. Joe Hardy of Seattle Prep (Seattle) was outstanding in the boy’s mile with a personal best of 4:09.88 in finishing second. Blake Haney of  Stockdale (Bakersfield, Ca.) and Kai Wilmot of North Central (Spokane, Ca.), both coming back for injuries, looked very promising in the two-mile  with Haney finishing sixth at 9:08.28 and Wilmot was tenth at 9:09.58.

There were number of good performances at the Eastern States championships Monday at the Armory. Junior Keteurah Orji of Mount Olive (Flanders, N.J.) won the girls triple jump at 40-10.50 to improve her nation-leading mark and Cidae’a Woods of Winslow (Atco, N.J.) continued to show consistency in the long jump with a PR winning long jump of 19-8. Junior Quashira McIntosh of Hope (Providence, R.I.) won the 200 with a fine 24.60. Erin Jaskot of Tappan Zee (Orangeburg, N.Y.) was third in the 800 at 2:12.11 and Deanna DiLandro of Ramapo (N.J.) was fifth at 2:12.47.  In boys’ completion, Andrew Trumbetti of Demarest (N.J.) was second in the shot put at 61-8. One week earlier he won his State Group meet with a 61-10. Taylor McLaughlin of Union Catholic (Scotch Plaines, N.J.) won the 400 at 48.75 for the third best Youth time in the nation.

The top Youth performance in state championship competition came in Louisiana where Devin King of Sumner (Kentwood) won the pole vault at 17-1 to equal the national lead and rank as the No. 1 Youth vaulter in the world.  In the Pennsylvania state meet at College Station, Cyre Virgo of Fleetwood won the high jump at 5-10 for the second best mark in the nation. Ethan Martin of Fox Chapel (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was second in the boys 3,000 at 8:33.63. Twin brother Colin was seventh at 8:43.61. Tessa Barrett of Abington Heights) won the girls race at 9:47.73 and Courtney Smith of Unionville (Kennett Square) was second at 9:48.24. At the unofficial California state meet in Fresno, Madeline Fagan of Los Gatos was a shock high jump winner at 5-10 for a four-inch personal best. Nia Britt of Alemany (Mission Hills) won with a national-leading 48-0 to miss her personal best by just nine inches. Ishmael Muhammad of Oakcrest (Mays Landing) won the New Jersey Meet of Champions 800 at 1:53.68.

At the Simplot Games in Pocatello (Id.), Alexa Harmon-Thomas of Lawrence (Ks.) first cleared 5-9 ¼ to win the high jump and then cleared an announced 5-10, that actually turned out to be a nation-leading 5-10¼. Sarah Feeny of Ogden (Ut.) was very impressive in the 1,600 with a 2:30 first 800 and then closed with a 2:26 for a 4:56.29 win at altitude. Equally impressive was the boys 3,200 that saw sophomores Elijah Armstrong of Pocatello finish second in 9:11.48 and Connor Mantz of Skyview (Smithfield, Ut.) take third in 9:14.88.

The two best outdoor performances came in the girl’s pole vault where sophomore Zoe McKinley of Grapevine (Tx.) won the Mustang Relays at 13-0 and Nicole Summersett of Westlake (Austin, Tx.) won the Chaparral Relays at 12-7. Both performances were personal best. Two athletes who meet the IAAF qualifying standards were Brian Oliver of Raines (Jacksonville, Fl.) winning the Booker Hill Relays 100 with a 10.73 into a slight wind and Kendall Sheffield of Marshall (Missouri City, Tx.) winning the Buffalo Relays 110 hurdles with 14.32 run with slight wind. Many other athletes would probably have met the IAAF standards but were denied the opportunity because wind gauges were not used. Coaches need to search out meets were wind gauges are in use and the readings are entered on the results. Without wind readings it does not matter how fast an athlete runs or jumps--they will not qualify for meets such at U.S. Junior championships or the World Youth championships.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes, at this time the exact number has not been set but it could be between 45 and 55, which was the size of the 2009 team.

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF. It should be noted that the events where athletes have met just the IAAF standards but have not been named to the previous teams, are the events where the U.S. is in greatest need of developing its athletes. Let’s hope that the USATF will be able find a way to send all qualified athletes to all world championships. These athletes are at an age (16-17) where they are making a decision whether to continue with track and field or gravitate to other sports. It makes a difference.

With a full season of competition to come, the U.S. has 26 girls and 25 boys, with a limit of two per event, that have achieved performances in 2012 that would place them in the finals of previous World Youth championships. However, they will need to repeat those performances between October 1, 2012 and June 26, 2013 and place in the first two at the U.S. Trials.  It is very difficult to speculate on the progress of athletes at this age, especially the boys, but it is very possible that as many as 55 athletes, with a limit of two per event, will achieve performance that would place them in finals. There were about 50 athletes that finished in the top two at the 2011 U.S. that had shown the ability to reach the WYC finals.  The IAAF provides funds for 20 athletes with U.S.A. Track and Field funding the remainder of the team.

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
