In Her Own Words: Kendall Ellis

The Adidas Grand Prix. The Dream 100. The Dream Mile. All three names are prestigious in themselves and will take place this Saturday in New York. It’s one of those meets that I wish I specialized in the 100 or mile, but you know, I wasn’t really meant for that. As for me, I’m not competing in either of the two well known events but rather the 4x4, which ought to be exciting as well. The St. Thomas Aquinas girls 4x4 is still ranked #1 in the nation and I’m blessed to be a part of it. When the girls and I first found out we’d be attending, we were all really excited for the experience. About a week after states we started getting back to work, training with Coach Armenteros as if we had never left the track. It was a little difficult coordinating schedules since one of our legs, a senior, recently graduated. But regardless of practice times, we all still managed to work out because of course you have to get it on your own, since no one else is going to get it for you.

Now the girls and I have been training together all year so this is nothing new. Still bonding, still teammates, still like sisters. Personally, I’m most looking forward to seeing my favorite person in the world Sanya Richards-Ross. It’ll be the third time I see her, but I’m still just as excited as if it were my first time. I also just love being surrounded by the best of the best, high school and professional. My other relay members are excited about the level of competition, seeing the professionals compete, and the overall experience of being in NY. Word on the track is that some Jamaican teams will be attending the meet as well so I’m looking forward to going up against what’s sure to be good competition. The experience in New York itself should be fun and something new and I’m excited for the challenge it’s sure to present. I’ve heard the atmosphere at the meet is similar to that of the Olympics and I know the level of competition is tough, so it’s all about going out there and running hard, my girls and I executing our races properly, staying calm, and doing what we're supposed to do up there: go for the gold.

I wish the best of luck to all milers and sprinters competing and can’t wait to see you there!
