Ky Westbrook of Chandler (Az.) and Blake Haney of Stockdale (Bakersfield, Ca.) headline Youth performers at the Adidas Dream 100 and Mile Saturday inn a cold and windy Randall’s Island stadium in New York City. Westbrook, who is undefeated at 100 meters and holds a win over Ariana Washington Long Beach Poly (Ca.), came into the meet with a best of 11.45 in winning her state Division I title. Despite the conditions, she almost matched that time with her winning 11.52. MaryBeth Sant of Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch, Co.), who came into the meet with a best of 11.38, was second at 11.55 and Kali Davis-White of Boyd Anderson (Fort Lauderdale, Fl.) was third at 11.59 to miss her personal best by .09. The previous week Haney had run a personal best of 4:07.16 in winning the California Central Section 1,600 final. Moving well in the latter stages of the Dream Mile he finished seventh in 4:07.78. According to the Track and Field News tables had Haney been running 1,500 meters that time would have been worth 3:49.2. It took an average of 3:53.69 to make the last two World Youth championships. Sarah Feeny of Ogden (Ut.) turned in a quality performance in the girls Dream Mile finishing 4:46.24—a time that translates 4:25.0 for 1,500 meters.

There were a number of outstanding states meets at Washington, Oregon, Kansas as well as the Illinois boys meet. Distances, as expected, grabbed the headlines in the Washington State 4A-3A-2A meet in Tacoma. Alexa Efriamson of Camas had a great double taking the 4A 800 in 2:08.17 and the 1,600 in 4:39.25. Oregon also had distance stars with Matthew Maton winning the 5A 3,000 in 8:28.62 and Paige Rice of St. Mary’s Academy (Portland) running 9:44.96 in finishing fourth in the girls 6A 3,000.        Nine of the ten California sections were held last week with the Southern section leading the way. Ariana Washington continued to rip through the sprints taking the 100 in 11.27 with a just over the allowable wind of 2.2 meters per second to follow up her 11.20 of two weeks ago. She then road a legal 1.8 mps wind to a 23.18 win the 200. Teammate Ebony Crear won the 100 hurdles with a wind-legal 14.10. Sophomore Kaitlin Merritt of Santa Margarita (Rancho SM) won the pole vault at 13-3 and freshman Courtney Currin of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City), the national leader at 20-11, won her sixth meet over 20 feet with legal 20-5¼.       Other marks of note: Freshman Grant Holloway of Grassfield (Chesapeake, Va.), who set a couple of class records in the hurdles indoors, cleared 6-11 at the Southern Invitational in Richmond, and Harrison Williams of University (Memphis, Tn.), who is better know as a multi-eventer, won the State D-II pole vault at 16-6. Chantel Ray of Hampton (Va.) just missed her personal best in the 100 hurdles win a 13.84 win in the 3A Eastern regional at Newport News. U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
