Mary Cain of Bronxville (N.Y.) took a small step out of her comfort zone when she entered the 800 at the Prefontaine Classic Saturday in Eugene—but it did not matter. The results were the same. More records against some of the best runners in the world. The pack was led through the 400, passed in 57.05 by Monica Hargrove of the U.S. Cain was content to remain near the back until about 120 meters remained when she took off and began picking off runners until she got up for fifth place running 1:59.51 and finishing less than one-tenth of a second behind four-time U.S. outdoor champion Alysia Montano. Cain’s time broke the national high school record of 2:00.07 set by Kim Gallagher of Upper Dublin (Fort Washington, Pa.) in 1982. But that was just the beginning. She also broke the world Youth record and the American Junior record. The listed WYR is 1:57.18 by Yuan Wang of China in 1993 but the top three times listed by the IAAF were run in the mid-90s by three Republic of China athletes, and are in some dispute. Most track authorities have considered Marion Hubner of East Germany the record holder at 1:59.65, which she ran in 1979. Gallagher had the old U.S. junior record and American Youth record at 2:01.82 set in 1981. As for her summer plans, making the U.S. team for the World Championship in Moscow is her top priority. However, there is a plan B and that included competition at the World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine.

Conditions at the California state meet in the central valley community of Clovis were very conducive to very fast times—100 plus degrees and a favorable legal aiding wind. The runners did not falter. Ariana Washington of Long Beach Poly won the 100 in 11.39 to post the fastest Youth time in the world. She also won the 200 in 23.22 just off her world Youth leading time of 23.18. Myles Valentine of Upland was second in the boys 100 running 10.48 but he set a personal best of 10.42 in the prelims—just .01 off the world Youth best set by Youxue Mo of China set in April. Marquis Morris of De La Salle (Concord) won the 110 hurdles in 13.90 to rank third on the U.S. Youth list. Vacaville had the second and third place finishers in the girls 100 hurdles in Daria Cook at 13.74 and Pattriana Perry at 13.87. Ronny Hall of Serra (Gardena) was fifth in the 400 with a 47.19 that ranks No. 3 among U.S. Youth. Blake Haney of Stockdale (Bakersfield) was a double winner taking 1,600 in 4:06.91 and the 3,200 in 9:01.65 with a 1:58.0 last 800.

Nathanial Moore of Castro Valley highlighted the field events. First up was the long jump which he won with a leap of 24-11½ to rank second among world Youth to a 26-0 by Jianan Wang of China. Moore also had a 24-6 ½ effort. Both jumps were wind legal. One hour later he faced potential disaster after passing his first attempt and fouling his second try. Jumping last, he needed to better 45-10 to advance and he responded with a jump of  48-8½  to take the lead. In the final round he produced a 50-11 ¾ effort to rank third on the world Youth list. Amir Ali Patterson of Crespi (Encino) was second in the shot put with a personal best of 62-9 ¼ with the high school weight of 12 pounds. The Youth weight is 5-kilograns (11 lb.) and Patterson’s effort would place him in the top four among the worlds Youth. He them came back to finish third in the discus with a throw of 187-6. Like the shot, the worlds Youth throw a lighter implement—1.62 kilogram to 1.5 kilograms—that amounts to about 10 feet. His effort at Clovis would rank in the top 10 with the lighter shot.

Luigi Colella of Thousand Oaks won the pole vault at 16-4 with a first attempt clearance at that height. If he is at the world Youth championship he very might be competing for Italy where his father was a world class vaulter in the 1990s. Eric Moore of Carter (Fontana) won the high jump at 6-11 to equal his personal best. Vincent Calhoun of Long Beach Poly set a personal best in finishing second at the same height. Freshman Courtney Corrin of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City), the world Youth leader at 20-11, was the winner at 20-8. Counting the preliminaries and the final Corrin took eight jumps and seven of them landed over 20-0 feet. Kaitlyn Merritt of Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita), who ranks No. 3 in the world with a personal best of 13-8, won the pole vault at 13-3¾. Alexandria Florent of Harvard-Westlake (Studio City) was second in the high jump at 5-10.

Nia Britt of Alemany (Mission Hills) was third in the shot put at 48-10¼ just off her personal best of  49-1¼. Like the boys, the girls Youth will now throw a lighter implement than the 4-kilogram orb the U.S. uses. The rest of the world will now use the 3-kilogram shot. There is not a lot of data to determine the difference between the two weights but Emel Dereli of Turkey has extensive experience with both weights and is a heavy favorite to win the event  this summer. She has seasonal bests of 63-5 with the 4-kg shot and 57-11½ with the 3-kg shot. So the difference is about 5 ½ feet difference. The No. 9 Youth performer has thrown 53-2 ¾. The U.S. Youth leader is Ashlie Blake of Liberty (Henderson, Nv.) at 51-3½. That mark would place her in the top five in the world with the lighter implement.

Here are just a few of the other outstanding Youth marks that took place in the last week.  Eric Brown of Wisconsin Lutheran (Milwaukee) won the Wisconsin Division I 800 title with a 1:51.48 and Ethan Moehn of Monroe was second in Division II at 1:52.37. Taylor McLaughlin of Union Catholic (Scotch Plaines, N.J.) won the State Group A 400 hurdles championships at 53.36 for the second best Youth time in the U.S. Ben Colello of Lincoln-Sudbury (Sudbury, Ma.) was the Massachusetts State champion in 53.65 to rank third.

Outstanding efforts by the girls included, Ersiula Farrow of Grosse Pointe South (GP Farms, Mi.) was third in the Michigan Div. I 800 at 2:07.91. Chantel Ray of Hampton (Va.) was the State 3A champion in the 100 hurdles in 13.69 for the second fastest Youth time in the U.S. and fifth fastest in the world. Kennedy Blahnik of Algoma Wi.) has only been outdoors about six weeks but threw the shot 49-1 ½ to win the Division III title. She also has a best of 157-10 in the discus. Adriana Brown of Lawrence Central (Indianapolis, In.) had an indoor best of 48-8 ½ with the shot but has turned her attention to the discus in the spring and threw  168-6 in her state meet to rank No. 3 in the world.

Special mention needs to be made of the outstanding marks that took place at the Freddie Houston Invitational in Denver. In just her fifth race of the outdoor season Dior Hall of Washington (Denver) won the 100 hurdles in 13.60 to rank as the No. 1 Youth in the world over the 33 inch hurdles. Yanique Thompson of Jamaica is the world leader over the 30 inch hurdles that will be used at the World Youth championships, with her 13.44. The difference between the two hurdles is a about three-tenth of a seconds. The race of the weekend came in the 100 where Allendra Watt of Pine Creek (Colorado Springs) was second  in 11.41, Jerayah Davis of Kelly Walsh (Casper, Wy.) was fourth at 11.63, and Chyna Ries of Washington (Denver) was fifth at 11.65 and Shayna Yon of Cherokee Trail, Co.) was sixth at 11.67. The race was aided by a legal 1.8 meter per second wind. Watts’ time ranks just behind Adriana Washington’s world Youth-leading 11.39.

On a final note, we have been told that Sabrina Gaitan of Sprayberry (Marietta, Ga.), who has a U.S. Youth leading mark of 184-6, has dual citizenship and will like be competing at the U.S. Youth trials in the hammer.

U.S. Trials Qualifying Information

The United States is the six-time defending World Youth team champion. The first two finishers in each event at the U.S. Trials meet in Edwardsville (Il.), provided they have meet the IAAF World Youth championship qualifying standard, will be placed in a pool and the team will be selected from that pool. The 2011 U.S. World Youth team was made up of 41 athletes. The USATF has fixed the size of the 2013 team at 40, twenty of which are paid for by the IAAF...

The general guideline that has been used in selecting the team has been a demonstrated ability to advance to the finals of the World Youth Championships. Those standards are much higher than the entry standards set by the IAAF.  In 2011 about ten athletes who had demonstrated by performance the ability to make the WYC finals were not selected. With more than two months until the U.S. Trials it is very evident that between 50 and 55 athletes will have shown the ability not only to the WYC finals but also place well. If indeed this comes to pass, the question that will be asked is how can the United States hope to continue its predominance in the world if it denies its athletes the invaluable experiences that can only be gained in competition such as the WYC?

Perhaps the most important thing that athletes can do is to be sure to have a U.S. passport valid through 2013. You must have a passport with you when you participate in the U.S. World Youth trials. You will not be able to get a passport at the U.S. trials. Be sure to allow at least six weeks from the time that you apply for a passport until it is sent to you. You can apply for a passport through the Post Office. Getting a passport is a long-term investment. It is good for 10 years and there is every reason to believe that athletes with the talent to qualify for the World Youth Championships will have need of a passport in the next 10 years.

A special note concerning the following events: 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters and 2000-meter steeplechase. All athletes must have a mark in these specific events to that meet the IAAF standards for entry into the World Youth Championships. You can not substitute 1,600, mile, 3,200 or two-mile times to meet the IAAF standards. You can use times in those events to qualify for the U.S. World Youth Championships Trials in Edwardsville (Il.). In the 100, 200, 100-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles plus the long jump and the triple jump, qualifying marks must be accompanied by wind readings of 2.0 meters per second or less. It should be noted that the hurdle heights at the U.S. Trials will be the regular high school heights while the height at the WYC will be three inches shorter in the boys 110 and 400 hurdles and three inches shorter in the girls 100 hurdles. For the first time marks made at the U.S. Trials can be used to qualify for the World Youth Championships.
