XC Sessions: Lucy Biles

MileSplit - How is your fitness now that you are in the middle of the 2013 season. What excites you most about the meets to come?

Lucy - I feel like I have really prepared myself for everything very well. I am running well in workouts and races, so I would say that my fitness is almost to the best it can be. I am really excited for some of the meets we have coming up because I am very anxious to see how much I can pr by.

MileSplit - After your big win at Bob Firman, and getting a berth at NXN last year, what expectations do you have for the rest of your senior year in XC?

Lucy - After my win at Bob Firman and having the chance to run at NXN I have a better understanding of how to run and what I need to do, so my expectations this year are fairly high for myself.  I want to be able to improve a lot on the courses I run and help my team out a lot.

MileSplit - When & how did you get started in cross country?

Lucy - My parents wanted me to start running because my mom had run in high school and she loved it. So I started running my freshman year and really liked it, I loved the team and just running in itself.

MileSplit - Person/people most influential to your success in cross country and why?

Lucy - My coaches are really influential to me because of how much they trust me and encourage me. I feel like I can go to them with anything and they will help me no matter what. That has really helped me with my success in cross country

MileSplit - Who has influenced you the most so far in your life and what they mean to you and your success?

Lucy - My parents are also really influential.  They are always making sure that I am on task and ready for whatever challenges I will encounter.  I am always prepared for anything because of them and always on top of things as well.

MileSplit - What are the keys to your successful cross country training program and what work did you put in to start off so well this year?

Lucy - I really focus on listening to exactly what my coaches tell me to do because I trust them and their knowledge in the sport.  At the beginning of the season I was just working on putting in the mileage and doing little things like eating right and working on my core strength because I knew the rest would come eventually.

MileSplit - What are the keys to your team's unity and how you train to reach your goals?

Lucy - Our team is very close because of how we run in workouts and what we do outside of practice.  When we do workouts we always start in a group and cheer eachother on which I think helps a lot. Outside of practice we have team dinners and we talk to eachother at school and stuff, we also all get along really well. That helps in races cause we all know each others capabilities and how we are feeling.

MileSplit - Your favorite past performance in a cross country race and why?

Lucy - My favorite prefomance in a past xc race would probably be state last year because of how I ran with no fears. I kinda just came out of nowhere and suprised a lot of people.  Including myself.

MileSplit - Who are the cross country competitors you most enjoy competing against and why?

Lucy - I really enjoyed running against Summer Harper,  Shea Martinez,  and I love running with Sarah Feeney. I like running with them because we would always talk afterwards and we were all friends which I thought was fun.

MileSplit - What is your greatest non-running experience in cross country so far and why?

Lucy - Last years trip to NXR was so amazing.  Our team got so strong from all the time we spent bonding outside of the race and practice.  This is my favorite because of the great stories I have now and the relationship with those people. And just because it was a bunch of fun.

MileSplit - What are your goals for the 2013 cross country season?

Lucy - My goals for the 2013 season are just to place well at state, NXR, Foot Locker West and hopefully Foot Locker Nationals.

MileSplit - Do you have any long-term goals in running?

Lucy - I would love to run in college and maybe go further. But I haven't really thought about past college yet.

MileSplit - What was your favorite performance from the 2013 World Champs?

Lucy - Oooh that's a hard one... I liked all of it! All of the athletes are amazing.  I really loved watching Mary Cain run though.
