DeMatha Catholic's Anthony McFarland out of Maryland has exhibited great speed for only a 9th grader with season best times of 6.45 in the 55 meter dash (US #10) and 7.01 in the 60 meter dash (US #23). McFarland has showcased his talents and speed outside of the Maryland state borders as he has already competed up at the NY Armory this season (Bishop Loughlin Games) and last weekend raced down in Alabama at the Crossplex in Birmingham. Another freshmen talent from the state of Maryland has really been running well as of late in Hereford High School's Kelly Wesolowski as she has strung together two consecutive sub 11 minute times in the 3200 on back-to-back Saturdays including a most recent 10:52 win at the Southern Maryland Indoor Classic this past weekend. After mixing it up with two Foot Locker finalists in Lake Braddock's Hannah Christen and Katy Kunc for her first sub 11 minute performance two weeks ago, Wesolowski was able to knock her time down a few more seconds for a US #5 ranking in the event regardless of grade level on Saturday in Landover, Maryland. The name McGorty ring the bell? Yep the youngest brother of last year's Foot Locker Nationals runner-up and New Balance Outdoor Nationals two mile champion Sean McGorty is now starting high school as the Chantilly (VA) freshmen Brandon McGorty is not only a solid young distance runner, but can do something his big brother never did in high jumping. Brandon McGorty automatically qualified for the VA 6A state indoor meet with a successful clearance of 6'2" this past Saturday at Episcopal School in Alexandria, Virginia, which tops all freshmen in the country at this point of the season.
