West Springfield (VA) senior Caroline Alcorta decided instead of traveling far for her spring break, she would be traveling fast at her nearby track for the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite hosted on Thursday at her high school in Springfield, Virginia. Alcorta, an New Balance Nationals All-American from last spring in the two mile as well as the Foot Locker South Champion and Foot Locker All-American (third in the finals at Balboa Park) in the fall, set a torrid pace in the 3200 meter run at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite on Thursday to run her fastest 3200 time ever at 10:19 to move her into a US top 10 ranking.
Alcorta, who has also anchored the West Springfield girls to New Balance National titles this past indoor season and outdoor season in the DMR and won the Millrose Games high school girls mile back in February in a Virginia high school state record of 4:46.06, is banking on earning a trip to the Brooks PR Invitational in late June to try and lower her 3200 time even more as well as so she can focus just on relays for the New Balance Nationals including helping West Springfield possibly extend their streak of DMR national titles to 3 straight. At this past March's indoor nationals, Alcorta attempted to triple with the DMR first, 4x800 second, and two mile last. The first two went very well for Alcorta with a team win in the DMR and setting a state indoor record in the 4x800, but fatigue set in that third hot race at indoor nationals as she ended up finishing 7th in the two mile at 10:35 and missing All-American honors.
Last weekend at the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational, Alcorta impressed in the 1600 getting a chance to race alongside two of her future UNC teammates in Hannah Christen of Lake Braddock (VA) and Blake Dodge from North Carolina with a US #4 time of 4:46.85. Her 3200 time at the Arcadia Invitational is the second fastest time in the national rankings not produced from the Arcadia Invitational placing her #9 overall. The hope for Alcorta and her coach Chris Pelligrini is that golden ticket comes in the mail from Brooks to make the trip to Seattle, Washington at season's end and hop into a loaded 3200 like the Arcadia Invite to pull her along to a lifetime best performance in the deuece.
