Future Stars Spotlight: Brodey Hasty

Brodey Hasty use to have to deal with racing at altitude in Utah during middle school, but now has deal with the heat and humidity after his family moved to Tennessee last spring before his freshmen year of high school. Regardless of dealing with thin or hot air, Hasty can run fast in either as his 15:40 5K best ranks among the very fastest in the nation amongst 9th graders. Running for one of the top distance programs in the Southeast at Brentwood High School, Hasty is hoping to thrive under his coach's guidance and be the next Future Star for the squad. Check out our interview below with Hasty, who ran 4:36 in the mile as an 8th grader.

Interview with Brentwood (TN) freshmen Brodey Hasty

How did you first get started and running?

I tried many different sports and I never really liked any of them. When my brother started running, I tried and I liked it. I ran a lot of 5K's for fun with my family and a few Ragnar Relays as well.

You just moved this past year from Utah to Tennessee. How was that transition and did you notice much of a difference in training coming from a higher altitude mountain state to a hot and humid southern state?

The humidity has been a bit hard to adjust to, but I do find it easier to run here than at altitude.

Your family moved to Tennessee in the spring and instantly ran some new PR's including a 4:36 mile as an 8th grader. Did it feel good to finally get a chance to run at lower elevation and post faster times?

Yeah, it was nice but training with faster and more talented kids here really helped me the most.

What has been like to join a successful program such as Brentwood? Do you wish you came a year earlier to run with that great class of senior runners that just graduated?

Yeah, that obviously would have been awesome but I got to run with them occasionally which was really cool. Spending time with them last Spring and this summer was amazing.

Talk about your big PR run of 15:40 at the Trinity/Valkyrie Invite. How did that race unfold for you and did you ever imagine you could run that fast for 5K this season?

I really didn't think it about it that much. I usually just go out, race hard and whatever happens, happens. I really wanted to break 16:00 so it felt great to get that time on a fast course.

What is a week of training like you? What are some of your top workouts to do?

I usually have a longer day, some hills and some tempo runs throughout the week. I really like the long days.

What are your goals for this season?

I really don't know yet, I just want to go out and run hard and have fun.

You have your older brother Gavin as a teammate and training partner. What kind of influence and impact has he made on you?

Yeah, Gavin influenced me a lot, definitely a lot. He was one of the main reasons I started running.  He’s taught me a lot about running and how to take care of myself after a run and it’s been helpful along the way.

What times would you like to run on the track this upcoming season?

I'll have to see how the rest of cross country goes and then set some goals with my coach after the season.

When you graduate in 2018, what are feats you would like to look back to say that you accomplished in your high school running?

I really like racing in the big meets with great competition because it really pushes me. I just want to look back and be excited about the things I've accomplished in my high school career.
