One of the best rivalries this indoor season was the clashes over the middle distances between Sammy Watson from New York and Ersula Farrow from Michigan. Watson won all 3 encounters, but each was a close battle. Watson broke Mary Cain's sophomore national class record in the 1K at the Armory Track Invitational in 2:47.27. She dipped under 2:10 twice in the open 800 this winter and anchored her SMR to a national record breaking time with her 800 leg. She scored her second national title at New Balance Nationals Indoor in the open 800 holding off Farrow for a US #1 time of 2:08.13.
