2012 Track Chats - Kendell Williams

Welcome to Track Chats 2012! We continue with multi-athlete Kendell Williams from Kell HS in Georgia.  Kendell recently opened her outdoor season with marks of 5-10 (HJ), 20-6 (LJ) and 13.64 (100H).  Check out her interview below as she tackles her season one meet and one result at a time!

MileSplit - Looks like you are off to a good start from the Cobb County results.  How do you feel entering the 2012 track season?

Kendell - I am excited about the outdoor season and getting a good start. My goals for the year are pretty aggressive so having early success helps.

MileSplit - When & how did you get started in track & field?

Kendell - I was 7 yrs old at my brothers baseball team picnic. A foot race broke out with the boys. I took off my flip flops and out ran them. My parents decided then to find a track program for me. We joined the team which is now The Heat Track Club.

MileSplit - Person/people most influential to your success in track & field and why?

Kendell - Person most influential would be my Dad. He has coached me without pressure. If I don't feel like practicing, he never makes me.

MileSplit - Your favorite track & field event(s)? why?

Kendell - I love the sprint hurdles, however I am really having fun with the high jump and long jump.

MileSplit - Your track & field event coach(es) and what they mean to you?

Kendell - My Club coaches have been great. I have gotten help from The Coaches at Throw 1 Deep, and of course my high school coaches have been very understanding.

MileSplit - Keys to your successful track & field training program?

Kendell - I probably don't train as hard as some people think. My Dad is always focused on longevity.

MileSplit - Your favorite track & field meet and why?

Kendell - Wow, that's a hard one. I am in so many meets that people consider "big" that I just try to do my best. I have really enjoyed all of the New Balance meets, and all of the AAU and USATF Nat'l meets, I can't answer that one.

MileSplit - Your favorite performance in track & field and why?

Kendell - My favorite performance is always the last one that I did well.

MileSplit - Track & field athlete(s) you most enjoy competing against and why?

Kendell - I don't look at competitors that way. I want everyone one the track to do well. I try to get in a zone where I am only thinking about execution.

MileSplit - Your greatest experience in track & field so far and why?

Kendell - Again, I don't have a greatest moment. Whenever I do well, for me that is a great moment. I never take that for granted.

MileSplit - Goals for the 2012 track & field season?

Kendell - My goals for 2012 are to just improve in my events. I would like to make the World Junior Team competing in Barcelona this year, but if I can just get better in each of my events, I will be moving in the right direction.

MileSplit - Long-term goals in track & field?

Kendell - In the long term, I would like to do well in college, then maybe go for the 2016 Olympics.
