Jenny Barringer proved that she can run with the nation\'s big guns. She finished in 2nd place in the Seeded Division--the fastest race at the nation\'s largest prep cross country meet.

It seems everyone is getting excited about the big race this weekend! The fourth annual flrunners.com Invitational is going to be the biggest and best ever. The level of competition is unprecedented possibly in Florida history. One participant, Matt Hensley, is so pumped up he couldn\'t help but put together a preview of the boys race of champions, where he and his brother will be running individually. Check it out!

Mount Lebanon used the one point provided by Jim O\'Toole, and good pack running by the girls\' team to win both titles.

Brian Fuller of Cumberland Valley, and Craig Miller, the soph from Manheim Township, battled to the finish again, and for the fourth time in six races over two years, they finished with a second of each other. Meanwhile, Allentown Central Catholic star Frances Koons took off at the gun and was never challenged. And the Carlisle boys and Parkland girls won tough races to say they\'re back in the hunt for state glory.

The rain should take some of the speed out of the a runner, but that doesn\'t appear to be the case with Greenville\'s Jed Christiansen. Erin Richard strong again. McDowell takes both team titles.

In both high school races Baldwin and Central Cambria waged close battles for the team titles. Berlin Brothers Valley freshman Megan Elder won the girls race; David Mock, Westmont Hilltop, the boys\'.

Buddy Davis, of host Council Rock-North, and Kate Vernon, of Gwynedd-Mercy, each broke meet records at the 5,000 meter Tyler State Park layout. Davis went 16:29 to break the 2002 mark set by Jon Coopersmith of Pennridge in 2002; while Vernon smoked the record by 1:10 in 19:06.

The University of Richmond men's and women's cross country teams both won the first annual Ukrop's Maymont Invitational held today. The women's team scored a perfect 15 points. Their nearest competition was Virginia Commonwealth University in 2nd place with 94 points. The Rams were followed in 3rd by Marshall University (WV) with 107 points rounding out the top 3 teams. On the men's side the Spiders scored 31 points (7 athletes in the top 12 over-all) to easily outdistance 2nd place Radford University with 81 points.

Quite a handful of collegiate teams competed in this past weekend's two big cross country festivals on the East Coast at Great American and Maymont, while the George Washington Invite saw a strong field assembled on the battlefield of Bull Run and the Bridgewater Invitational drew a small field of division III schools.

What a difference a week makes. Last week, everyone was concerned whether or not there would be a Maymont festival given the damage in the area after Hurricane Isabel roared through. But streets were cleared, and on Friday power was restored in the start/finish area to supply the timers, food stands and bands.

The Maymont Cross Country Festival kicked off in it's inaugrual year with flying colors, while previously established meets such as Bristol Cross, Great American, and Lee-Davis Invitational had plenty of action happening this past weekend.

Florida\'s current leader at the 5K distance, Andy Biladeau is up north. He will be running with a large number of other Florida runners at Great American--the largest high school cross country race in the nation. Andy talked to Matt Baum, looking forward to tomorrow\'s race.

Andrew Symmes is a junior at Eastside High School. The Eagle has run cross-country since seventh grade and is the number one runner for Eastside. Symmes is coached by 26 year Head Coach Ed Boehmke.

South Carolina coaches, athletes, and spectators are going to be busy this weekend with four in state meets and one out of state meet. The Great American Festival is set to be held in Cary, NC on Friday and Saturday.

The Great American Cross-Country festival is scheduled to take place for the fifth year starting on Friday, Sept. 26 and will finish on September 27 at SAS Soccer Park in Cary, NC. Since its inaugural start in 1999 at McAlpine Park, home of Wendy\'s Invitational, the course stayed at McAlpine during the flood in 2000.

Neither Hurricane Isabel nor an additional 5 inches of rain Monday night has thwarted plans for Richmond Sportsbacker's Ukrops XC Festival at Richmond's Maymont Park this weekend. Kicking off on Friday night will be the college and adult men and women's 18-24 and 25-29 bracket open races. Then on Saturday morning a lengthy list of area high schools will face off following opening events for elementary and middle schools.

The first test of the season for most teams came this week with all the districts in the region beginning their dual meets, as well as many teams travelling to invitationals. It was a great week for Steven Walters (Green Run, Beach District) as he nearly broke a course record and also set himself apart from the rest of the state

Fauquier junior Sarah Bowman, the top ranked cross country in the state and defending AA state cross country champion, will be competing in the MileStat.com Invitational on October 11th at Pocahontas Park along with her team, Fauquier High School. Bowman is considered by many to be a Footlocker Finalist this fall after her performances last year as a sophomore, which included five individual state titles (1 cross country, 2 indoor track, and 2 outdoor track) and a national title in the mile indoors.

David Mock, Westmont Hilltop, and Sonya Hinish, Bishop Guilfoyle, returned to home territory after strong races at State College 9/13 to take the Altoona Invite.

Chris Scanlon is a sophomore at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville. The Ram finished with the fastest time for freshmen at the 2002 State Cross-Country Championships at Sandills Research Center in Columbia.

Erin Richard is having a great start to her first season of cross country, winning another invitational and helping McDowell come out on top in a very tight team race.

Ian Fitzgerald wins again with his team trouncing the entire meet with just 34 points. Marissa Umbel races tactically to a 24 second win.

Steve Hallinan, Cardinal O\' Hara, and Ian Gottesfeld and Greg Williams of Henderson, all broke Chris Dugan\'s course record at Belmont Plateau in the Briarwood Invitational.

The 2003 Lake Murray Invitational took place on Saturday, Sept. 20 in Chapin at Crooked Creek Recreational Park. The event conisted of a junior varsity girl\'s race at 8:30 a.m., a junior varsity boy\'s race at 9:15 a.m., the varsity girl\'s race at 10 a.m., and competition concluded with the varsity boy\'s race at 10:45 a.m. Awards followed at 11:30 a.m.

The premier meet in Texas this week was the Texas A&M Invitational. The meet hosted both Collegiate and High School action

Greenville\'s Jed Christiansen runs 15:18 to easily distance himself from the field, while Hickory\'s Kara Morris went 19:21 to win the girls\' race and lead her time to the title. Union City wins the boys team title.

Sara Roberts the helped her team defend their home turf with a first place 20:29 as Perkiomen Valley held off Radnor 45 to 54.

Roman Catholic's Dan Keefe was 2nd in 16:46 and was joined by three teammates in the top eight, to lead his team to the title with 33 points, 43 less than Haverford School. Ian MacTavish of Germantown Friends won individual honors in 16:17.

Virginia Tech, James Madison University, and Roanoke college all hosted home invitationals this weekend, while Mary Washington traveled to New York City to compete at Van Courtland Park.

In the wake of Hurricane Isabel\'s destruction, many weekend invitationals were cancelled or postponed, but several invites in the Southwestern part of the state were able to go off as the area was not hit terribly hard by the storm.

\"It may have been the best boys\' XC race that I have been part of in my 35 years.\" And that\'s saying something for Carlisle coach Harold Travis, who has seen a few meets over the years.

Ross Kaiser is a junior at Lexington. Kaiser is looking to make top five at the 2003 state meet.

For the first time ever, flrunners.com will charge admission at this year\'s cross country invitational. The $3 admission price will not only help support the site, but will aid new scholarship fund.

Hey, I'm Billy Bob and I'll be writing "Billy Bob's Weekly Rundown" each Monday after looking over the weekends festivities, all the way up until the big day on November 8th. What I have to say may not always be pretty or you may not agree with it, but that's tough, you'll live. So here we go...

Mount Lebanon's James O'Toole led his team to a 3rd place showing behind two Ohio teams, Wooster and Hoover. His 15:51 was good for a 13-second victory, making him the 3rd fastest all time in Invite race history and

Erin Richard continued her first XC season with another win, going 19:31 to lead her team to a win with just 38 points. The McDowell boys didn\'t have first, but came in 5th through 11th for 25 points and the easy team win behind Brandon Balwick\'s 17:18. Fort Leboeff\'s Bruce Hordusky was 1st in 16:40.

Here is our final seed list of girls teams placed in the race of champions. The boys list and seed sheets for the invitational division (and later large and small school divisions) coming in the next few days.

The Spiked Shoe may now be known as the Alphabetical Invite, as every varsity team was divided by the first letter of their school name, given the OK to race more kids, and placed in races many of the coaches and athletes found less than acceptable. Two athletes in particular were left without the competition they came to race. The other two races were much closer. And 2001 AAA State Champ Dan Mazzocco won the men\'s 5.2 mile race.

Liz Kearins, the Central Bucks West freshman who burst onto the scene with a win at the Viiking Invitational August 30th, won again, holding off Lauren Bowles of host Upper Dublin by 20 seconds, in 18:30 over the 3 mile course.

Cross Country was spectacular in the Dallas area this week. The area showcased its elite teams and individuals.

Hatboro-Horsham captured both the girls' and boys' team titles, despite placing only one girl and two boys in the top ten.

Tim O'Neill won for the 2nd year in a row with a time of 16:31.80 on the 5100 meter course. Like most of PA on Saturday, they didn\'t escape the rain. O'Neill led his St. Joseph's Prep team to a win with 59 points (1-7-12-16-23), 27 better tha Upper Darby with 86 (4-9-15-21-37) in a field of 17 teams. Twin Valley won the girls title. Central Dauphin's Maria Truskey was 1st in 19:48.

The much anticipated Chiles vs. Bishop Kenny matchup didn\'t come to fruition, as BK ran their B team. While the boys team title was an easy call, the individual races were not. Contributing reporter, Zach Spain, gives his wrapup of Friday night\'s meet.

What a week for Cross Country in Texas. The highlights of the week were the Marcus I Invitational (Northlake\'s Park) and The Woodlands Invitational (Montgomery College).

A floodgates opened this past Friday across the state of Virginia as the state was drenched by a storm system that rolled through leaving many of the cross country courses for this past Saturday\'s invitationals in a muddy, sloppy, and slow mess.

Rain was the main topic of the day throughout the state on this day. The rainy, muddy conditions really had an affect on the main races.

The Blue Demon Invitational hosted by Christiansburg High School has more hills than most cross-country courses, and is not for those favoring flat courses. Only the start is relatively flat and everything else is either uphill or downhill. The anticipated match-up between Christiansburg and Rockbridge County did not materialize as Christiansburg continued their early season dominance of Southwest Virginia teams. Christiansburg won team trophies for boys and girls, and first place individual trophies for boys and girls.

Mary Washington College and Roanoke College headed northward to duel it out in Pennsylvania, while the University of Virginia hosted a highly competitive home meet that included the likes of Duke University and William & Mary. Washington & Lee University also was host to a number of schools at their home invite.

Memberships are just one of the many things we\'re working on to make PennTrackXC a sustainable, usable site for our PA High School XC and T&F athletes. But...

Frances Koons, Allentown Central Catholic, is one of the top returning harriers in PA, and on 9/8 faced a legend and a XC newcomer who left field hockey behind to take to the trails, breaking the legend\'s course record and showing the newcomer how it\'s done.

Four of PA\'s top returning harriers went one-two in each large school race at Gettysburg, 9/6. And if these races are any indication, then it\'s going to be as close this year, as last.

Westmont-Hilltop's David Mock stayed close to defending state champ Chris Spooner a week ago, but had no competition this week, winning going away in 16:00. Indiana junior Marissa Umbel went 18:44 to win by 1:04 over sister Rachel.

Manheim Township sophomore Craig Miller didt\'t surprise anyone today. But he still went out and topped his own meet record against top senior Brian Fuller of Cumberland Valley.

Gulliver Prep junior, Bryan Sharkey has been making a ton of noise since last fall. We caught up to Bryan to speak about his summer training, his shot at a State title, and his chance at qualifying for Footlocker Nationals this November.

Buddy Davis won the race and led his Council Rock North team to 20 points and a win. Four other teammates were in the top ten. The Council Rock North girls were led by Jessica Cickay's 2nd place 17:45.

West Chester Henderson has been doing relays so far this season, but it's hard to hide their one-two punch of Ian Gottesfeld and Greg Williams (or is it the other way around?).

Cardinal O\'Hara goes 1st and 2nd, but Coatesville wins boys title, while Gwynedd-Mercy takes the girls championship.

The Jersey Shore boys and the Jersey Shore girls scored wins over five other teams, including Williamsport.

Ian Fitzgerald cruised to a 15:29, followed by two of his teammates in the top six, to lead his team to a 78-81 win over rival Mount Lebanon. And sophomore Katie Grimm went 18:30 to win by six seconds.

The first true weekend of racing action for high schoolers kicked off with several in-state invitationals with plenty of top teams and individuals squaring off with one another in early season contests.

The State College girls and Owen J. Robert's boys win with nice pack scoring.

The Eye Opener kicked off its 20th year in existence on Saturday at the Milliken Plant in Spartanburg with the women's collegiate 5k. The first Eye Opener took place in 1983 at The South Carolina School for The Deaf and Blind in Spartanburg. The event moved to Milliken in 2000 and has attracted high school and collegiate runners from Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Cool weather brought record breaking times in Spartanburg on Saturday.

Holy Trinity coach, Doug Butler, and his girls team had something to prove to Great American meet directors. His girls were out to earn themselves a spot in the race of champions by showing what they could do against Bishop Kenny.

Here are the top returning athletes and teams from the 2002-2003 XC, and track seasons. We\'ll offer some additional insights and make a few picks later this weekend, but this should give you something to discuss on the Forums.

Lancaster Intelligencer sport writer Joel Schreiner braved the rain to cover the season debuts of two of PA's best, Craig Miller and Kristen Groff.

Brian Soder, Harbor Creek goes 15:27 to break Andy Weilacher's course record by 21 seconds. Grant Allen, Eisenhower, 2nd in 15:56. Erin Richard wins on home course in 19:27.

This could be one of the closest year's yet as O'Hara chases a fourth consecutive title. And at least three guys have a shot a Brendan Benner's PCL record.

The University of Florida announced this morning that its meet will go on despite the treat posed Tropical Storm Henri. They have decided though to combine the high school open and invitational divisions.

The 2003 Eye Opener is set to take place this Saturday in Spartanburg. The event, hosted at the Milliken Plant by The South Carolina School for the Deaf and Blind (SCSDB) along with the help of race coordinator Jack Todd, includes high school and collegiate races.

Because of a strike by teachers, most of the activities scheduled by the Philadelphia Catholic League have been cancelled. The schools remain open.

The last two years of the Fork Union Invitational saw a clash of the titans on the boys

Two-time PCL champ Steve Hallinan is poised for a big senior season, with his eyes on performing his best in the big November races the first and last Saturdays of the month. PennTrackXC talked with Steve after his course record at the Viking Invitational August 29.

The West Middlesex boys kicked off their season with signs they have another good squad, while the Hickory girls topped the West Middlesex girls on their home course.

O'Hara is the team to beat on the boys side, while it could be a four team race for the girls' PCL title. Both individual titles are held by two-time champs Steve Hallinan and Amy Kelly.

After 36 hours offline because of an inaccessible, holiday-hostage of a broken router, we are finally back on. Our apologies. It was driving us more crazy than anyone.
