 WHEELING, W.VA)---West Virginia Wesleyan's women and Wheeling Jesuit's men claimed the team championships at the WVIAC Track & Field Championships. The Bobcats edged host Wheeling Jesuit 200-179 to earn the women's title, while WJU used a strong second day to control of the men's meet to outscore West Virginia Wesleyan and Concord.  (Click on the article for more and full results.)

 Highlights:  Caitlin Bowne wins the 100H in 14.71. Kayla Parker wins 100m after taking second in the 100H minutes earlier!  Hillary Neal wins Girls 1600m.  Michael Anderson outleans Ryan Harris at the line in an EXCITING battle for the Boys 1600m title time of 4:19.38.  Neal got her second win of the night taking the 800m title.  Whitney Strickland took the win in the boys 800m, he dictated that race. Hale wins 3200 after 2nd place 4:57.x 1600 battle earlier.  Michael Anderson wins his third title of the day (4x8, 1600) to win the 3200 after battling for many laps back and forth for the lead with Kyle Cooke.   Wheeling—WV.  Day One Results have been posted for the WVIAC Track and Field Championship which are underway in Wheeling. The WVIAC is the largest NCAA Division II conference with 16 members. See the article for more. 

The 2007 Dogwood Track Classic will be hosted Saturday, April 28th at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field in Charlottesville. This year’s edition will feature a total of 94 schools and over 2000 athletes as the largest meet within the state of Virginia. Within the large number of athletes competing, it is not hard to miss the great number of Virginia’s finest high school athletes who will be at Dogwood this weekend. MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage this weekend. Girls preview to be posted later today. One of the main events will be the opportunity to watch and see if Robert E. Lee senior Sean Holston (pictured left by John Herzog) can break 21 seconds in the 200 meter dash with a legal wind on Saturday as Dogwood meet management has assured there will be wind gauges. The fastest Virginian prep at 200 meters with a legal wind was Curtis Riddick in 1980 at 20.80. Holston ran an impressive 21.07 clocking last weekend after doubling back from a US #3 effort of 46.55 in the 400 meter dash. Holston's time was the fastest recorded in the country this year, but without a wind reading for his race at the Allen Johnson Invite, it could not stand officially as a US #1 performance. He'll look to make it official this weekend at Dogwood.

Mike Feldman is having a very special year as head track coach at Osbourn Park. Feldman is coaching one of the best teams that he has ever had with his Osbourn Park girls. They are the defending Northwest Region indoor champs and can compete with the best of them in the state. Two years ago at the outdoor state meet, the Osbourn Park girls did not even break into the top 30 in the team scoring. Now they are mentioned as one of the top five track teams in the state after finishing sixth at the state indoor meet. With only Katie Trizna, a recent signee for the University of Virginia, as their lone top athletes not returning next year, Osbourn Park has the talent to make a run to become the first state team champion in track from the Northwest Region since the Sheena Johnson-led Gar-Field squad won back-to-back outdoor titles in 1999 and 2000 outdoors as well as the 2000 indoor title. They will be in the hunt this spring, but will have even a greater chance next year. Also as a proud dad this season, Coach Feldman gets a chance to watch his senior son Alex Feldman (pictured right with dad) finish out his high school career at fellow Northwest Region school Forest Park.  Coach Feldman has been selected as this week's MileStat.com Coach of the Week.

Fork Union boys ran a US #3 time of 7:47.78 at the Volunteer Track Classic today as they broke the meet record by 15 seconds. FUMA was the runaway winner as Smiths Station (AL) was a distant second in 8:09.49. Peter Dorrell got even with FL South champ Ryan Hill from North Carolina after finishing second in Friday's 3200 with a victory in the 1600 meter run in 4:17.46. More to come from Knoxville....

Fork Union senior Szymon Rola had a splashing debut in the 2000 meter steeplechase in Friday night's portion of the Volunteer Track Classic at the University of Tennessee. Rola won the race in six seconds with a final time of 6:19.99. Rola's time is only five seconds off the national qualifying time in the event for Nike Outdoor Nationals, but the qualifying time is insignificant to Rola as both Fork Union teammate Axel Mostrag and Rola will be headed back home to Poland at the end of the May and jump into the track championship meet series there. Mostrag competes in the 3200 meter run later this evening with current state leader Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg (9:10 best), while Fork Union will be loading up their outstanding 4x800 meter relay on Saturday in Knoxville. The Fork Union boys without Mostrag or Rola won the DMR in 10:36.09, while the Blacksburg girls (12.33.51) were a close second with less than two tenths of a second separating them from a win in the girls' race.

  T&F athletes in fiery rescue near Germantown High School This was a track meet with no ordinary highlight. The best performance at Germantown HS on April 19, by far, did involve running and jumping and teamwork, though. Along with wonderful bravery.   Highland Springs senior Rashaad Cannon and Deep Creek senior Ashley Gatling have been selected as MileStat.com Athletes of the Week ending in Saturday, April 14th. Both Cannon and Gatling were close national runners-up at Nike Indoor Nationals this past March and appear to be hungry this spring for their last opportunities for national championship glory as at the Taco Bell Classic, Cannon turned in his first 24 foot performance in the long jump with a US #6 mark of 24'0.50", while Gatling cleared 5'10" for the first time since her freshmen year to move her to a US #1 ranking in the high jump.

The Deep Run Invitational, formerly known as the Lee-Davis Invitational, will be held for the second year in a row away from its original home at Lee-Davis High School in Mechanicsville at its new home at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen. Co-host schools of the meet feature many of the top athletes in the meet with Briana Hudson, Courtlin LaReau, and Ashley Orr for Deep Run and Rachel Butler for Lee-Davis.

 Neely Spence set PRs in the 800 and 1600.Highlighting the weekend... No matter where you live in PA, the early spring has been less than cooperative for training. Apparently, it was no big deal... because the first gorgeous weekend for meets resulted in performances worthy of any season, early or late. At the AA-AAA formatted SHIPPENSBURG INV, there were unexpected PRs, a 4-event winner, a huge disc and jav (from the same person), a sub-five mile and sub 2:17 800 (from a different same person), some pre-state previews of hot sprint match-ups, and two smokin' 4x400's by the same school. At the MOON MIXED RELAYS, North Allegheny won seven events to win the unique two-boys, two girls team format, with Seneca Valley taking four and garnering 2nd as a team. At the CAL TRACK CARNIVAL @ California University PA, Hopewell's Kalley Baker won two sprint events; teammate Bruce Fleming captured the jav and shot; and Rochester senior Derek Moye won the 200 and the single lapper. At the BUTLER INVITATIONAL, McDowell's boys won the team title, while the North Allegheny girls won their competiton. The McDowell girls were 3rd and got a major contribution from Ajla Glavesevic, who won the long and triple jumps. Two girls bettered 40' in the shot put. Baldwin's Chris Wolfe led four guys under 2 minutes in the 800. Three guys were under 9:40.1 in the 3200. Three guys were under 11.0 hand in the 100. (American Conference, Hermitage, Great Valley, Waggoner, and Washington-Greene County summaries by Kimberly Jaick Soden) Wissahickon dominated its own AMERICAN CONFERENCE RELAYS by winning nine relays for boys and girls combined. The squad won the boys shuttle hurdle relays, the boys and girls 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays as well as the boys distance medley. At the CITY OF HERMITAGE TRACK & FIELD INVITE hosted by Hickory High, Northwestern senior Amanda Seigworth set meet records in the 100 and 300 hurdles. Her teammate, Cody Cipalla, a senior, pulled off the sprint double, capturing both the boys 100 and 200 meter dashes. He also finished second in the high jump. Sophomore Lauren Zarger of Hickory Creek and senior Zachary Ross of Meadville Area each double-dipped in the distance events with both capturing the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. Rounding out the double-winners were Hickory senior Arin Whitman, who won the girls shot put and the discus. The Lakeview boys team, which won the 4x100 and the 4x400 relays. The GREAT VALLEY RELAYS saw a trio of schools send the same four relays members home with two golds apiece. Swenson captured the girls 4x100 and 4x200 (4x200 and 4x400 splits available); Simon Gratz was victorious in the 4x200 and sprint medley, and Chester won the girls 4x400 and sprint medley. In the field events, Penncrest's Karen Shump won the shot put and discus. Ryann Krais worked on two of her Pentathlon events, clearing 5-6 in the high jump and long jumping 18-2.5. At the JOHN WAGGONER INVITATIONAL, held at Solanco High, Ross Shober, lead Garden Spot to the boys team title by winning the 100 and 200, as well as the long jump. Teammate Liz Martin of Garden Spot showed she can win at 100-meters, with hurdles or not, by capturing both the 100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. At the WASHINGTON-GREENE COUNTY COACHES MEET, held at Cannon-McMillan High, the host school's Katelynd McElhany captured the 100-meter hurdles and the triple jump. Peters Township's Nate Janusey was the meet's only other double-winner. He captured the shot and discus. At the BALD EAGLE INVITATIONAL @ Lock Haven University, Indian Valley junior Brooke Mathews won three events, the 100, 200 and a leg of the 4x100. Double winners included Central Mountain junior Kristin Brandt in the long and triple jumps. Kim Hanslovan of Dubois took the javelin and shot put. Lewisburg junior Casey Miller won the 1600 in a meet record and ran on the winning 4x800. In Tennessee at the VOLUNTEER OUTDOOR TRACK CLASSIC, Easton's Chanelle Price won two events, both in meet record times - the 400 and 800. Nazareth Academy's Meghan Lutz was 4th in the 3200 and 8th in the 1600. At the 1ST SOUTH FAYETTE LION'S T&F INVITATIONAL, Brentwood sprinter Davon Moore posted a quick 100 in the prelims before winning the finals. He was 3rd in the 200 behind Rochester's Derek Moye, and Center's Corey Forrest. Moye also fashioned a quick win in the 400. Moore contributed to the winning 4x100. At the 46TH LEONARD STEPHAN T&F CLASSIC @ Wilson HS, West Lawn, Muhlenberg sophomore Tyrell Ellison got in a big high jump, clearing 6-07. He was 2nd in the triple jump. Schulykill Valley's Devan Coon took two from Daniel Boone's Aubrie McAlpine, winning the 100 and 200. Distance runner Nick Hilton of Exeter captured the 800 and 1600. Tory Toso of Wilson won the pole vault with a 11-6 effort. Justin Germaini of Daniel Boone clearedf 15-01. Danielle Laws, Reading, won the shot put and discus. At the CENTRAL BUCKS WEST RELAYS, The home girls are looking strong again this season in the 4x400. They torched their home track to a sub 3:58. The North Penn guys were down there with Harrisburg (at Ship) with a sub 3:21, a new meet record.  Gwynedd-Mercy tuned up for Penn with a strong 4x800. The CB West girls set a meet record in the 1600 SMR. Pennridge set a record in the 4x1600, and did a strong DMR. North Penn's Kaitlyn Dugan won the long and triple jumps. CB West's Justine Robertson captured the shot and the discus.  Neshaminy's Tim Malloy cleared 6-6 in the high jump. Abington's Jarret Eaton smoked the 300 hurdles to a stadium record sub 38. At the FAIRVIEW KIWANIS INVITATIONAL, Girard's Regan Moore won the 100, 200 and the 100 hurdles. Strong Vincent's LaMont McWilliams was also a triple winner, capturing gold in the 100, 200 and triple jump. Fairview's girls and boys won their respective 4x100's. Other double winners were Emily Neder, Fairview, in the shot and discus; Sam Havko of Fairview in the 800 and 1600; and Chris Boat of Youngsville, in the shot and discus. At the KANE INVITATIONAL, it was no surprise to see the emergence of another strong high jumper out of Bradford. Erica Pascarella, a sophomore, cleared 5-6. The boys' shot put was huge with Blake Eaton of Allegany-Limestone ripping a throw over 61'. He also threw 168+ to win the discus. Bradford's Rob Bleem won the javelin and took 2nd in the shot and discus. At the MORGANTOWN HIGH / WVU T&F INVITATIONAL in West Virginia, Chartiers Valley took 1st in the girl's 4x400 in a meet record time. Joe Thorton was their top field competitor, winning the shot put and taking 2nd in the discus. At the BULLDOG CLASSIC @ the University of Louisville, KY, Mercer's Melissa Smith took 2nd in the 3200 in a PR of 11:11.62. At the NEW YORK RELAYS, Methacton's boys came away with some awards. Eric Brittingham won the Invitational javelin and the SMR took 6th.  Results posted for 18 meets. We still need results from Mount Carmel and Red & Black Inv @ East Stroudsburg.  Leslie Sherman (West Springfield HS '05) Evan Vucci/Associated Press  Jarrett Lane (Narrows HS '03) Family photo As I learned of the news on Monday as we all did on the shootings at Virginia Tech, my first concern was if any past Virginian high school cross country and track athletes were one of the growing list of victims. With such a large school that draws many of our former track athletes and friends, the fearful chance was there. As the names of the victims have been released in the past days, my worst fears have been realized as two of the victims were past high school cross country and track athletes in the state in Leslie Sherman (West Springfield HS '05) and Jarrett Lane (Narrows HS '03). It is such a tragedy to see bright and wonderful people die so young and especially participants of our great sport. MileStat.com and the rest of the Virginia high school community would like to give out their deepest condolences to the Sherman and Lane families. Narrows is a small rural community near the West Virginia border. Jarrett was valedictorian of his senior class. Many remember him for his track performances.In 2002 at his Mountain Empire District outdoor track meet, Jarrett received 5 All-District designations. Jarrett was 2nd in the Triple Jump, 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles, 3rd in the high jump, and 4th in the long jump. Jarrett went on to place in the 110m hurdles at the Region D meet making him All-Region and qualifying him for the Single A State meet. Baldwin sophomore TJ Hobart, who's full name is Thomas John Hobart Jr., didn't surprise his coaches a whole lot with his recent 4:15 1600. According to head Baldwin coach Ed Helbig, the program tries to find one eighth grade boy who appears to have the potential to go far in high school. April 2007 - Training Camp at Tenero (Josi is front & center)    In training camp, you can really focus on training because your whole day is truly based on training.  So even though I do homework here, it is based around my running schedule, whereas when I'm at home, I feel like I base my schedule more around school and my job. Things are coming together again so I'm just happy that I can run at a decent pace once again and that my workouts are rolling again!  Man, that was a long SLUMP to get out of after December...

Fork Union coach Winston Brown is not only at the helm of one of the state's top track programs, but is arguably one of the biggest supporters of high school track and field in the state of Virginia. With his weekly radio show, Track Talk with Coach Winston Brown on ESPN radio and his overall genuine care and interest in the other athletes, coaches, and teams throughout the state, very few coaches in the state give back to the sport as much as Coach Brown. While he has the state's top distance relays in the DMR and 4x800 meter relay and one of the state's top track teams, it is Coach Brown's giving back to the sport that earns him this week's MileStat.com Coach of the Week honors.

At the TACO BELL CLASSIC in South Carolina, Methacton's Ryann Krais set a MR and a PR with her 59.34 win in the 400 hurdles. Conditions were better for distance than sprints at the 7TH HURRICANE CLASSIC, but at least there was no rain, snow, or wind. Meet and track records fell in the 4x80, 1600, 3200, shot put and pole vault. Breehana Jacobs of Laurel Highlands is running well for the bad western PA weather. She was named track athlete of the meet at the 16TH LADY SPARTAN INV. Hempfield thrower Kim Kanala was the meet's outstanding field athlete. Diana Filtz of Penn Trafford and Kiski Area's Leah Ulizio also had outstanding meets. The girls dominated the 19th PAN-RAM INV., while the boys were 3rd within 10 of Cumberland Valley. Lhayana Dallas led the Cougars with wins in the 100 and 300 hurdles, and the high jump. AA power Boiling Springs was led by distance star Kara Millhouse, who doubled- dipped for distance wins. Teammate Anna Bixler scored in three events. An awesome 800 from Central Dauphin's Andrew Rotz. Daniel Boone's Aubrie McAlpine won the 100 and 200. Cumberland Valley sprinter Juan Steward pulled the 100 and 400 double. Lower Dauphin hurdler Eric Oneal swept his two events. Central Dauphin's Justin Shirk set a meet record in the jav; and Anna Muzio of Central Dauphin won the shot put and discus. The Selinsgrove girls swept three relays at the 27TH PURPLE & WHITE RELAYS @ Shamokin HS... taking the 4x100, the 4x200 and the 4x400. The Williamsport boys took the 4x100 and the 800 SMR. The javelin is a strong event in PA, and the big guns are starting to warm up, this past weekend at the 37TH ANNUAL TFCAofGP RELAY CARNIVAL. LaSalle's Brian Moore threw to the PA lead. North Penn's sub-8 4x800 says they have reloaded nicely. Abington was quick in two relay wins. The national champ XC team Coatesvlle guys posted a very fast DMR. In the 'better you than me' event, Joe Berry of Hatboro-Horsham cleared 15-04. At the ARCTIC BLAST INVITATIONAL, Northern girls have a strong distance program as reflected by strong wins in the 800, 1600, 3200 and 4x800. State College sprinter Alex Kenney took the 100 and 200. The South Western boys posted a fast 4x400. At the BRISTOL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS INVITATIONAL, Father Judge sprinter Mike Zampirri took care of 100 and 200 biz. He also anchored their winning 4x100. Neshaminy's Tim Bech won the 300 hurdles, and the long and the triple jumps. Three guys busted 2 in the 800. At the COLTS NECK RELAYS, in New Jersey, Unionville set a school record in the DMR, taking 4th. Paul Springer led off in 3:02.1 1200, passing you-know-who to give his team a 10-15 meter lead. West Chester Henderson's girls were 2nd in the DMR. At the 5TH GREATER LATROBE INVITATIONAL, Hempfield's Weston Banks upped his PA#1 discus ead by over 6'. And his nearly 60' shot put was just a half-inch below his season best. Triple jumpers Garner McCloud (Kiski Area) and Dan Sandrowicz (Indiana), were over 46'. Sandrowicz also won the long jump. Greensburg Central Catholic junior Chris Hayden-Martin won the 100 and the 200. Kiski Area easily captured the team title. At the BEDFORD GIANT EAGLE INVITATIONAL, Jordan Donaldson of Tussey Mountain set two meet records in the single and double lap events. Sarah Strayer of Forest Hills won three events, the 800, 1600 and 3200, the latter a meet record. Berlin's girls and Bedford's boys took team titles. At the DELCO T&F RELAY CARNIVAL, Upper Darby took two of the sprint relays, Chester captured both sprint medleys, and Archbishop Carroll, Radnor and Archbishop Prendergast split the long stuff. Upper Darby's Bintou Dibba won the long and triple. Karen Shump of Penncrest had the top shot and discus performances of the day. It really was the Kaitlyn Dugan show at the DON SELTZER TRACK & FIELD RELAYS. The North Penn senior not only won three events, but she posted some very strong marks, putting up the #1 long jump in the state, the #2 high jump by an inch, and the #9 triple jump. At the HARBOR CREEK INVITATIONAL, Ogechi Nwokedi of Oil City won the 400 and 800. Strong Vincent senior LaMont McMilliams was a double champ, taking the 100 and 200. At the HEMPFIELD BLACK KNIGHT INVITATIONAL (D3), Conestoga Valley's Vince McNally set a pair of meet records, ripping a sub-4:18 1600 and holding off Hempfield's Andrew Kontra in the 800. Garden Spot teammates Ross Shober and Liz Martin were double champs in the 100 and 200. The home team girls set meet records in the 4x400 and 4x800, while the guys set a meet record in the 4x800 and won the 4x400. Hempfield's Christi Griffiths set two meet records and tied a 3rd, winning the long, triple and high jumps. Ashley Myer of Oxford took the shot put and the discus. At the SOUTH HILLS CLASSIC @ Baldwin HS, Baldwin sophomore TJ Hobart ran another sub-4:20 for 1600. Hurdler Brice Myers of McDowell won the 110 and 300. Brentwood's Da'Von Moore posted a quick 100. North Allegheny thrower Jade Hambrick won two events, the shot and discus. At the TROJAN TRACK & FIELD CLASSIC, @ Center HS, Derek Moye of Rochester cruised quickly through the 200 and 400 for wins. Denes Veres, Riverside, was a double winner in the shot and discus. Hopewell's Kailey Baker won the 100 and 200, while Monaca's Josh Nadzam captured the 800, 1600 and 3200. At the PACER RELAYS, the Glen Mills guys got in some quick workouts, posting strong times in winning the shuttle hurdles, 4x100, 4x200 4x400 and 1600 sprint medley relays. Methacton's guys ran a strong DMR to outpace Owen J. Roberts. They also held off OJR in the 4x800 by four seconds. The Spring Ford girls won the shuttle hurdles and the sprint medley. At the HORNET INVITATIONAL @ Honesdale HS, East Stroudsburg North's Jon Clouse won two events, taking the long jump and the javelin. Lakeland's Mark Bucklaw posted a solo 4:26.2 in the 1600. Teammate Kyle Pepson ran 1:57.6 in the 800. The Abington Heights girls took the 4x100. Honesdale's Cassie Schweighofer threw the shot 38'+. At the 1ST LADY REDSKINS INVITATIONAL @ Neshaminy HS, Central Bucks West thrower Justine Robertson did just that... and very well... winning three events: the javelin, discus and shot put. The CB West 4x800 ran sub 9:56, and took the 4x400 as well. Council Rock North senior Allison Sikora held off Nazareth's Meghan Lutz in the 3200 by less than two seconds. Blacksburg coach James DeMarco has been selected as the first ever MileStat.com Coach of the Week (week ending April 7th). DeMarco had two individuals competing in different parts of country on family spring break vacations with Laurel MacMillan at the Arcadia Invitational in Calfornia and Peter Dorrell at the Florida Relays as both had personal best runs this past weekend. Meanwhile, DeMarco was with his team at Radford for the Faster Farther Higher Invitational in which the Blacksburg girls took a share of first as a team, while the boys team finished second in the team standings.  MileStat.com Athletes of the Week for the week ending in April 7th are both juniors in Blacksburg's Peter Dorrell and Park View's Natalie Baird. Dorrell faced Florida's best in Gainesville over the weekend at the Florida Relays and came away with a personal best for 1600 meters in 4:15 and doubled back for a 9:10 3200 meter rin. Meanwhile, Baird swept the throws at the Colonial Relays including a personal best mark of 42'9" in the shot put and five throws of six over 140 in the discus.

God on the Starting Line is an auto-biographical story of the 2000 St. Rose boys cross country team in New Jersey.  The team is coached by world-reknowned running guru and journalist Marc Bloom.  While Bloom is no stranger to running, he is still rather new to coaching--then in his third year.  He is a Jewish man coaching at a Catholic school and finds a way to unify them through finding common bond despite differences and by overcoming adversity.  The path to a "perfect season" does not always look perfect and it can be the struggles that define you as much as the triumphs.  In the end, the kids learn a lot from their famous mentor, but Bloom perhaps learns more from them. read more...

Axel Mostrag did not have the race that he had hoped for in California as he finished seventh in the invitational mile (a field of 14) at the Arcadia Invitational in a time of 4:14.80. Nonetheless, Mostrag's time is a state leading performance thus far this spring. At the Mobile Challenge of Champions,  Robert E. Lee senior Sean Holston won the 400 meter dash in a national leading time of 46.77 to break 47 seconds for the first time and improve upon his 47.12 previous best from his national championship at Nike Indoor Nationals. Holston also ran a US top ten time in the 200 meter dash as he doubled back to win the event in 21.58, which is just off his indoor and all-time best posted at Nike Indoors of 21.53. With his sprint double, Holston was named the MVP of the meet. Alan Webb became the first ever runner to break 4 minutes in the mile on a South Carolina track Saturday in the ASICS Blue Shoes Elite Mile Run at Furman University in an official time of 3:57.83.

Bob Cooke interviews Joseph Franklin of Godby High School in Tallahassee, Florida.  Franklin was among the nation's leaders last year in the 800m and leads Florida thus far in 2007 in the 800m (1:53.11), 1600m (4:14.27), and has the second fastest 3200m time in the state (9:29.73).  Yesterday in Gainesville, the junior won the high school  1600m race at the prestigious Florida Relays.

Video interview by Brandon Miles with Colonial Relays 3K winner Andrew Mearns of Jamestown. Mearns closed in 61 seconds in his final 400 meters to take a 8:39.42 victory. His time is equivalent to a 9:17 3200 meter time, which would be 18 seconds faster than his 3200 meter best of 9:35 from last spring.

The biggest regular season meet of the year in Florida takes place in Gainesville today. Expect long lines and parking woes as the meet will be competing with basketball national championship revellers. Field events start at 10AM and the first gun sounds on the running events at noon. After a three year absence of the Colonial Relays, one of the most historic meets in the state of Virginia with its beginning in 1963, due to reconstruction at William & Mary's Zable Stadium, the meet returns on an brand new track for the great high school and college competition that will converge in Williamsburg for the two day event. Several of Virginia's top high school athletes will be competing in the Colonial Relays including Natalie Baird, Chris Tyson, Kristy Tobin, Marcus Robinson, Thomas Porter, and Kristy Tobin. Expect to see plenty of "old faces" competing as well with the many colleges also competing at the relays having some of the old high school stars on their rosters. Tyson was a state champion for 1000 meters (2:31) and an All-American in the mile (4:19) indoors.

"Matka (Polish for mother)! I'm going to be a Vol!" is a likely phone call that Fork Union senior Axel Mostrag made to his mother back home in Poland this week. Another big committment has came in a short time span among Virginia's best this week after Sean Holston announced today that he'll be attending Florida State and now Fork Union middle distance star Axel Mostrag has made his college decision. Mostrag, the Nike Indoor Nationals champion for 800 meters, will be coached by past Virginia high school prep great George Watts (Thomas Edison HS) at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Tennessee had already picked up another one of Virginia's top distance harriers earlier in the year with West Springfield senior and Footlocker finalist Mike Spooner signing with the Volunteers. Mostrag has personal bests of 1:50.60 for 800 meters, 2:26.11 for 1000 meters, 3:52.20 for 1500 meters, and 4:13.42 for 1600 meters. Both Mostrag and Holston have yet to sign their letters of intent, but have made their verbal committments to Tennessee and Florida State respectively.

Robert E. Lee senior Sean Holston, one of the top high school sprinters in the country this year, has committed to run for the defending NCAA Division I outdoor champions of Florida State University next year. Holston will join 2006 Bayside High School (Virginai Beach, VA) graduate Charles Clark, who won two national championships last year for 200 meters at Nike Indoor and Nike Outdoor Nationals. Holston has already won two national championships in his senior year with wins at Nike Indoor Nationals last month in the 200 and 400 meter dash. Coach Braman at FSU now finds himself with two of the best sprinters ever produced from the state of Virginia. Holston will be opening his outdoor season this weekend less than four hours from his future college destination at the Mobile Meet of Champions in Mobile, Alabama. Axel Mostrag (Pictured to the left, Photo by David Fleenor) will be flying across the country this week to test himself in possibly his lone opportunity to bust a fast mile time while in the states at the Arcadia Invitational. Meanwhile, Mostrag will be featured on a loaded distance medley relay for Fork Union that will also be competing in California. Three other Virginians will also be competing against many of the nation's best athletes from one of the best states for high school track and field in California. David Fleenor will be on-site for photo coverage at Arcadia of the Virginian athletes.

Teona Rodgers of Tampa Wharton High School started the season strong and hasn't let up yet!  Today in Tallahassee she tied Pavielle James' 2003 state record of 13.51.  Rodgers ran a 13.70 last weekend at Lake Mary, which was already the leading Florida girls time this season. Rodgers also ran a PR in the 100m with a time of 11.63, which is third best this year in Florida.The boys 1600m race was a thriller!  Joseph Franklin and Connor Revord both ran well under the previous top 4 lap time in the state this year.  Franklin, starting to round into the track superhero we all expect, won in 4:14.27, Revord came through at 4:15.45.  The previous day, Joseph ran for a 9:29.73 victory in the 3200 meters. Clarence Powell of Cottondale, had a new PR in the triple jump with a mark of 48-10.  That puts him at #2 in Florida this spring. Miami Belen Jesuit continues to better their previous best each week and extend their lead over the rest of Florida.  On Friday they did so with a 7:56.90 easy win in the 4x800.
