  • Highlights around the MileSplit Nation

Mayors Cup Hall of Fame (NY): Livingston drops US #6 all-time 600, US #1 from Jamaican born Brown Terrence Livingston of Great Neck South (NY) clocked in at a US #6 all-time performance of 1:19.48 in the 600 meter dash to set himself up for a highly anticipated race next weekend at the New Balance Collegiate Invite against the Hendrix twins of New Bern and US 400 meter leader Clayton Perros of New Jersey. (Read story by Chris Hunt of ArmoryTrack.com). Livingston was one of two US leading performances at the Armory this weekend as Jermaine Brown, an Jamaican import, has quickly put his name ontop of the national leaderboard in his short stay in the states with a US #1 33.78 clocking in the 300 meter dash. Lashawn Merritt Invitational (VA): Grassfield's Shepherd adds US #1 long jump to collection of big marks Grassfield (VA) senior Karimah Shepherd had already held the outright claim of the nation's best mark this season in the triple jump with a 40'6.50" performance three weeks ago at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton, Virginia. Shepherd showed this weekend that the long jump is an event, which she is equally skilled by becoming the first female prep in the country this season to leap over 20 feet. Shepherd had to defeat previous US leader Tiffany Harris at 19'10.50" in the process. A big surprise for the NC State bound Shepherd with her US #1 mark of 20'0.50" at Saturday's Lashawn merritt Invite  as she had never been over 19 feet before with a previous all-time best of 18'7". University of Washington Invitational (WA): California girls blaze through the Northwest Ashton Purvis and Trinity Wilson stormed into the Northwest this weekend for the UW Invitational and proved exactly why they are considered as two of the top high school track athletes from one of the nation's best states for track and field. Competing against collegiate athletes, Purvis placed second in the 200 meter dash with a 24.00 clocking and posted a US #1 time in the 60 meter dash at 7.46. Only a high school freshmen, Wilson humbled the the college hurdlers at the meet by winning the 60 meter hurdles in a US #2 of 8.56. St. Christopher's Invitational (VA): US top 5 solo 3200 runs from Strehler & Dejarnette Friday night's 3200 meter races held at the one of the nation's finest indoor facilities found at a high school at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, VA had two race winners turn in impressive solo performances. Barbara Strehler, a UVA commitment from Trinity Episcopal School, broke 11 minutes for the first time in a US #5 time of 10:58.42. The state of Virginia appears to be the hotbed for boys two milers as Atlee senior Ben Dejarnette's US #4 performance of 9:12.83 now gives the state four of the nation's five fastest 3200 performers currently.

  • New Bern 4x400 run #2 all-time indoor ever on all tracks (200m or oversized) at 3:13.24!

The New Bern boys from North Carolina continue to impress with an incredible indoor season of amazing relay performances topped most recently tonight at the KTC Indoor Track Classic in Tennessee as their 4x400 meter relay ran the #2 time ever in high school history on all sized tracks with a 3:13.24 performance on the oversized track at East Tennessee State. Their time was actually faster than the listed "national record" in the high school boys indoor 4x400 meter relay set by Muir High School in 1996 at 3:13.34, but Muir High School will keep their national record (for now) as they ran their time on a 200 meter indoor track which is the standard for all high school national record performances in the circular running events. The fastest oversized track perfomance belongs to Dallas Lincoln at 3:11.7, which puts the performance by the New Bern boys in perspective since they just ran the fastest high school 4x400 indoor time since the 1970 performance from the Dallas Lincoln squad. More results and news from Johnson City forthcoming...

  • Millrose Games: NJ sweeps miles, US #1 in 60, Albemarle boys win 4x800 battle of titans

An exciting night of high school action took place at the 102nd Millrose Games in New York. It was a big night in particular for the state of New Jersey as the two mile winners both came from the state with Jillian Smith of Southern Regional successfully defending her title from a year ago in 4:51.88, while Manalapan High's Robby Andrew dropped the hammer on the boys' field with a sub 60 second last for a 4:17.43 victory. The clash between the nation's top two 4x800 meter relays never materialized or at least there was not as much drama at the end as the Albemarle boys from Virginia took charge from the opening leg and never looked back as they scored an 8 second victory on the US leaders from Morris Hills in New Jersey (8:03.31) in a near meet record time of 7:54.59, which is an incredible performance on the short track at MSG. New Jersey prep Clayton Parros held his own against the professional runners in the men's 600 yard dash to finish third at 1:12.64. National leading performances are usually not expected at the Millrose Games, but the short track does not hurt the short straightaway races as shown by Devon Smith from Westlake High School in Maryland blazing a US #1 6.65 clocking in the 60 meter dash to win the junior race division.

  • New Bern, Goodman, Chambers, Stowers, & Nelson featured in TN HS indoor invite

Quite a few national caliber high school track stars will be headed to Tennessee this weekend for the KTC Indoor Track Classic held at East Tennessee State in Johnson City. The New Bern boys from North Carolina have been traveling all around as of late including trips to Arkansas, Virginia Tech, and the New York Armory and this weekend find themselves at ETSU with their US leading 4x400 meter relay and national ranked individual athletes. Their 4x400 meter relay will be looking to run ever closer to the high school national record of 3:13 after running 3:17.00 at Virginia Tech last weekend. The Hendrix twins, currently ranked #1 and #2 in the 500, will look to drop their 400 season best times further with Anthony at a US #2 time of 47.73 and Andrew at a US #3 time of 48.12. Teammate Fuquawn Greene is also a national leader in the 200 meter dash with his 21.39 season best. Greene will be racing in the 200 meter dash this weekend along with the 60 meter dash, which his 6.85 season best ranks him third in the US at this time. Chalonda Goodman, the returning Nike Outdoor Nationals champion in the 100 and 200 meter dash, makes her 2009 debut this weekend in the 200 meter dash. Goodman, a senior at Newnan High School in Georgia, has a personal best of 23.22 in the event. The national leader in the weight throw and US #5 in the shot put, Lauren Chambers, with her 58'4.75" season best in the weight throw, will make an attempt at the high school indoor national record in the event. Chambers, a Southern Cal commitment, qualified and competed on the US team at the World Junior Championships last summer. Also competing this weekend in Tennessee will be a teammate of Chambers from the 2008 World Juniors team in hurdler Jasmine Stowers from South Carolina. Another one of South Carolina's best is also making the trip to Johnson City in junior Briana Nelson, one of the nation's top returning 400 meter dash specialists with a 53.45 personal best and third place finish at Nike Outdoor Nationals last June. • Athlete Spotlight: Wayne Davis

After a sensational sophomore year which concluded with a World Youth Championships title in the 110 meter hurdles followed by national record breaking indoor season as a junior, Wayne Davis of Southeast Raleigh (NC) hit his first road block last spring in the outdoor season. It turned out the superhuman phenom was actually human as an ankle injury lingered with him throughout the spring and reached a breaking point literally at the USATF Junior Nationals as the initial sprain injury ended up becoming a fracture to end his year. As a result, Davis' hopes of a returning to the World stage against the top junior hurdlers on the planet were lost. In an exclusive interview with MileSplit US though, Davis reveals that the injury may have been a blessing in disguise as it has forced him to pace himself better and re-adjust his training for his senior year, which should set himself to be healthy and finish strong this summer. He certainly does not appear to be behind schedule as his US #1 clocking of 7.09 last weekend at the Virginia Tech Invite puts him only a hundredth of a second off his US #2 all-time performance of 7.08 from last year's meet despite having trained for a significantly less period prior compared to 2008 at this points. The North Carolina high school track star returns to Virginia for a second straight weekend for the Lashawn Merritt Invitational on Saturday being held at the new Boo Williams Sportslex in Hampton.

The 102nd Millrose Games will be shown live on ESPN2 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM on Friday night with the high school mile races expected to be shown. The mile races are always the premier high school events in the meet, but this year will have other events gaining attention including a showdown between the nation's fastest two 4x800 meter relays in the Morris Hills boys of New Jersey (US #1 7:46) and Albemarle (US #2 7:49) of Virginia. Another event to look forward to is the mens' 600 yard dash which will feature current US 400 leader Clayton Parros competing against older professional athletes. Preview forthcoming.

  • Hasay named Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year

Two-time Foot Locker Nationals champion Jordan Hasay of California was just named as the 2008-2009 Gatorade Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. A easy selection as the senior from Mission College Prep in San Luis Obispo, California became the first two-time Foot Locker Nationals champion to have won her second title after a two year drought from her first national title as a freshmen to cap off a stellar high school cross country career on a high note. Hasay defeated one of the greatest girls' fields ever assembled for the Foot Locker Finals at Balboa Park in San Diego as the race featured two other previous champion along with Hasay in Florida's Ashley Brasovan and Tennessee's Kathy Kroeger.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Clayton Parros

(Photo by wingedfootphotos.com) Seton Hall Prep (NJ) senior Clayton Parros entered the current indoor season as the nation's fastest returning 400 meter sprinter from last winter. Parros also set himself up to be looked upon as one of the nation's best coming back for 2009 after his 47.20 clocking to make the finals of the 400 meter dash at the USATF Junior Nationals last June. With a recent US #1 performance of 47.58 at the New Balance Games, the UNC recruit Parros appears to be on the right path of reaching some of his big goals this year including breaking the New Jersey state record and qualifying for the World Juniors team in the 400 meter dash. While the Millrose Games will have some exciting high school races, the 12th grader Parros will be competing on the banked track at Madison Square Garden this weekend against professional athletes in the rarely contested 600 yard race. MileSplit US interviewed the nation's top ranked high school athlete at 400 meters prior to his first race against pro competition.
