Jordan Hasay began her final high school outdoor season on Saturday at the San Luis Obispo County Meet and the Mission Prep (California) senior turned in a US #1 time of 4:47.05 in the 1600 meter run to drop 3 seconds from the previous national leading performance. It was not the first track race in 2009 for Hasay though as she competed in her first indoor race several weeks ago with a 10:10.89 victory in the two mile run at the Nike Indoor Nationals in Boston.
Hasay will certainly have her eyes set on chasing national records this spring in the 1600 (mile) and 3200 (2 mile) meter run, while already holding the US high school record in the 1500 meter run (4:14.50) and currently ranked #2 all-time in the 3200 meter run (9:52.13)
Dekalb County in Georgia is proving itself to be a hotbed for national caliber high school track & field performances as shown by the results from day one of competition at their county championships on Monday. Three US #1 performances came out of the meet on Monday with more action to follow through final day of events on Wednesday.
Brittany Porter of Towers High School has been on a tear in the girls' long jump since her win at Nike Indoor Nationals as she extended her previous US leading outdoor mark to 21 feet and 3 1/2 inches, while also taking the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet.
Miller Grove High School and Ken Gilstrap were rolling out some blazing times to start the week as well as Gilstrap improved his US #1 time (10.39) in the 100 meter dash to 10.31 in the prelims, while also clocking in the nation's fastest time of the season in the 200 meter dash as the first under 21 seconds at 20.98 in the preliminary round. Gilstrap also ran on Miller Grove's 4x100 meter relay which became the first school under 41 seconds in the country at 40.98 in the prelims.
Another Grove school, Cedar Grove, also posted a swift relay time in Monday's qualifying rounds in the boys 4x400 meter relay at a US #2 3:16.12.

MileSplit US highlights from this past week featured a US national record in the SMR by New Bern (NC) at 3:19.58, two US all-time performances in the high jump by Erik Kynard (US #3 all-time 7'4.50") of Ohio and Hannah Wilms (US #7 all-time 6'0.25") of Iowa, an amazing double of US #1's in a 40 minute span by Reggie Wyatt of California (46.47 400, 36.59 300H), a deep 3200 at FSU Relays with 6 under 9:15, and five US #1's at Stanford led by a pair from hurdler Kori Carter (13.92 100H, 1:00.66 400H).
More to come over the next few days as we add more results and performances from states all over into our national database.
Rogers OH senior Erik Kynyard finished his indoor season as a Nike Nationals champion in the high jump and did not wait long to be soaring high again in his specialty for the 2009 season. The Kansas State recruit successfully cleared a height of 7 feet 4 1/2 inches at the Huron Relays held at Eastern Michigan. The performance now ranks Kynyard #4 all-time on the US high school all-time list and the season is very young for him to continue to move up on that list.
Kynyard leads what has been an incredible start to the spring season for the boys high jump as more than a handful of preps have alreadly went well over 7 feet this season including a 7'3" clearance by a Californian in a dual meet this past week from Nick Ross.

It was a close win for Sobrato CA senior Wolfsmith with Eric Olson of Novato CA at 8:29.03 and Nathan Mathabane of Lincoln OR improving 20 seconds from last weekend in the event in third at 8:29.62.
Although several have leaped over 24 this season across the country, Chase Wheeler has the furthest wind legal long jump of the outdoor season as of now at 23'8.25". Moreau Catholic's Alitta Boyd and Fremont's Malaina Payton had a great competition in the girls long jump with both leaping over 19 feet and into the US top 10 rankings.
In the pole vault, Rob Simmons of Rocklin successfully cleared a US #3 height of 16'1".
The state of California now has the top five fastest girls DMR times with Casa Grande moving to #2 in the nation with their 12:16.71 victory.

One of the top performances of the meet came from Conant's Jeff Thode in the 1600 meter run as he joined a select group of high school preps to have run under 4:10 for 1600 meters this season with his US #9 performance of 4:09.94.

Both US junior teams placed fifth at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships held in Jordan this weekend.
The US junior women had two high school runners compete on their squad with Ashley Brasovan (pictured left by Tim O'Dowd of IrishRunner.com) of Florida in 26th place (21:55) and Alex Dunne of California in 34th place (22:15) on the 6K course held on the Bisharat Golf Course in Amman, Jordan. Brasovan and Dunne were the second and third finishers for Team USA behind collegiate freshmen Neely Spence (Shippensburg University PA).
No high school boys were on the US junior men's squad as they were led by several of last year's national prep stars including US high school 2 mile record holder German Fernandez in 11th place and Chris Derrick in 15th place.

An outstanding 3200 meter race was held Friday at the FSU Relays. Nike Indoor Nationals mile runner-up Patrick McGregor from Hoover, Alabama was looked upon as one of the pre-race favorites, but McGregor ended up severall in the race with a time of 9:20.19 as the unheralded Florida boys stole the show in their exhibition of great depth. Derek Wehunt of Sickles had a great closing kick in the final 300 meter run to win in a US #4 time of 9:06.78. Leon's Matt Mizereck followed in as runner-up in a US #5 time of 9:09.24. Colin Barker (3rd, 9:11.20), Connor Revord (4th, 9:14.95), Brian Atkinson (5th, 9:15.01), and Will Stanford (6th, 9:15.58) helped round out arguably the deepest 3200 meter high school race in Florida state history. New Bern was pulled along to the national record by event winners St. Augustine (3:19.48). It was an incredible 7 second improvement from their US leading indoor best of 3:26.28 from the Simplot Games.
The relay order and unofficial splits: Fuquwan Greene (200-20.9), Miles Sparks (200-21.9), Anthony Hendrix (400-46.5), & Andrew Hendrix (800-1:49).
The Raleigh Relays also has high school 3200 meter races on Friday as Samantha George of Millbrook (NC) won the girls 3200 leading 6 under 11:10 with her 10:56.76. George is only a ninth grader and won the freshmen mile at Nike Indoor Nationals two weeks ago in Boston. Winner of the boys race was Chapel Hill's Taylor Gilland as he defeated Foot Locker 3rd place finisher Thomas Porter of Mountain View VA (9:14) in a final time of 9:11.
The Iowa State Indoor T&F Championships held at the University of Northern Iowa saw a US all-time performance in the girls high jump from Hannah Willms as the Dike-New Hartford High School athlete cleared a US #7 all-time height of 6'00.25". A collegiate meet showcased North Carolina's best high school athletes at the 49ers Classic with the New Bern boys taking no break from their indoor season with three three relay titles last weekend at Nike Indoor with a US #1 performances from Anthony Hendrix in the boys 400 meter dash (47.03) and US top 5 performance from Fuquwan Green in the 200 meter dash. The same meet also saw a US #1 time in the 5K by Alex Gellman of Myers Park in the 5000 meter run at 17:37. At a high school meet in North Carolina, Butler's Aslynn Halvorson launched a US #2 mark of 155'8".
The distance relays were rolling out some fast times in California as the Dana Hills boys ran two US leading times at the California Relays with a 10:11 DMR on Friday and 7:45 4x800 on Saturday. The La Reina girls also ran a US #1 time in the DMR at the Camarillo Classic. Anna Jelmini had a meet of big throws at the Atascadero Memorial Mark with US #1 marks in the shot put (50'3") and discus (166'2.50"). Most states are lucky to have a 7 foot high jumper once a year, but California had two over the height in the same meet with Harrison Steed and Jules Sharpe both clearing 7'0" at the San Clemente Trio Invite.
Further up the West Coast at the Oregon Preview meet, one of the nation's best returning half milers in Elijah Greer stepped up to 1500 meters against collegiate competition to turn in a sub 4:10 converted mile performance of 3:50.70.
Nation best marks in the field events were recorded in Colorado with Mason Finley throwing for a US best of 207'0" in the discus to go along with a US #2 shot put mark of 66'8" in the same meet. More...
MileSplit US National Outdoor T&F Rankings: Boys - Girls
Some swift early season distance medley relay times were posted on Friday in invitationals held in California.
At the California Relays, Elias Gedyon (pictured left by Margot Kelly) ran a sub 4:10 1600 meter anchor leg for Loyola (10:14.48), but his team finished three seconds behind a Dana Hills squad who clocked a US #1 outdoor time of 10:11.99. With the potential of the Albemarle boys (VA), Nike Indoor Nationals champion and US #2 all-time indoor DMR, coming out to Arcadia next month, there is potential of a great DMR battle if both teams opt to compete in the relay race. In the same meet, the Wilson High girls from Long Beach could have ran a faster combined 1600 leg than Gedyon with their 4:06.83 victory in the SMR.
The La Reina girls clocked an early US leader in the DMR at the Camarillo Classic with a time of 12:18.09. Host school Camarillo had a strong performance out of sophomore Heyden Woof with his 15:12.27 victory in the rarely contested 5000 meter run.
He was inspired to run by one Olympic champion and has been compared to another.
Tavaris Tate wouldn’t mind one day joining their company.
So far the Mississippi native and Starkville High senior is taking the right path to achieving that success.
This past weekend, Tate solidified his position as the top quarter-miler in the country, capturing the 400-meter run at the Nike Indoor Nationals. He won a close race over Seton Hall (N.J.) Prep senior Clayton Parros, circling around the oval at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center with a time of 47.84 seconds to Parros’ 47.85 effort.
Just about 5:30 on Sunday night, the Nike Indoor Nationals came to close. For the boys, the final day of the three-day meet couldn’t have had a better ending.
The hundreds of spectators that filled the seats at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center were treated to an exciting afternoon that included a pair of national records among a cluster of spectacular performances.
Here’s a recap of a long day of track & field that was worth the price of admission and perhaps a few dollars more:

In pursuit of a national record at the Nike Indoor Nationals on Saturday afternoon, the Knights Track Club’s 4x1 mile relay team earned that mark with ease inside the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center.
Despite leadoff runner Ryan Sleeper falling to the surface before the first 200, the quartet of Sleeper, Tyler Corkedale and twin brothers Jim and Joe Rosa, who are all teammates at West Windsor-Plainsboro (N.J.) High North, smashed the old mark by more than four seconds, combining for a time of 17 minutes, 21.58 seconds.
Track Eastern Carolina (TEC), a talented 4x200-meter team from New Bern (N.C.) High, also were eyeing a national mark..
One tough exchange and a little nudge along the way prevented that from happening. Nonetheless, the foursome of Faqauwn Greene, Daishawn Styron, Anthony Hendrix and Andrew Hendrix left the track with a new meet record with a combined time of 1:27.91. That clocking smashed the old mark of 1:28.90.
SUNDAY: Robbie Andrews and Conor McCollough both shatter US record. Purvis and Rankin win the 60m dashes, Wilson and Crawford win the HH. SATURDAY: Nick Vena (Morristown, NJ) tosses shot put 70-05, which is a National Soph. record, NJ states record, and Armory record. FRIDAY: Solomon Haile(Sherwood, MD) wins in a new national record time of 14:22.88. Fordham Prep breaks national record in the shuttle hurdle relay with their 29.15 winning time. Sheepshead Bay is 2nd in 29.18, the 2nd fastest time ever. Swensen Tech girls win in 33.40.

Connor McCullough smashes national record in weight throw!

Freshmen phenom Verzbicas makes Haile's 5K HSR short lived
There were only two events held on Friday at the Reggie Lewis Center for the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals and there were two national records. If the trend continues through Saturday and Sunday, there is going to be major revisions done to the national high school track record book.
Connor McCullough had shattered the national record in the weight throw one year ago in a victory at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. The senior from California made his first trip to the East Coast this year for the weight throw competition on Friday at NIN. When he was finished, McCullough had bettered his old national record mark on two attempts with his final attempt making the new national record nearly five feet better than a year ago with a monster throw of 92'7.50". When asked if he thought he could throw as far as he did, "Not at all, I didn't expect to throw this far."
While McCullough became a national record holder as a junior, Lukasz Verzbicas may be one of a kind in setting a national record holder as a freshmen. Verzbicas simply dominated a field of upperclassmen runners as the ninth grader from Lincoln-Way Central in Illinois won by a whopping 43 second margin of victory. The difference between himself and his competition was almost impressive as his final time. Foot Locker Nationals champion Solomon Haile had set a new high school indoor record in the 5K only hours earlier at NSIC, but Verzbicas made it extremly short lived as he crossed the line in a new national record time of 14:18.42. Verzbicas knew that Haile had set the record earlier in the day at 14:22, and his dad told him to shoot for 14:16 going into the race. Lukas talked about his desire to double back and win the 2 mile on Sunday. "I won't be going for the national record, I just want to win, I know it's going to be difficult." Also when asked about his plans for the outdoor season, he responded "I hope to run, but I will be focusing on the triathlon." If today was a glimpse at the future, it's certainly going to be a bright one for the youngster.
Their female counterparts did not set any national records, but US #1 performances were at least produced by Lauren Chambers of Georgia in the weight throw at 58'10.25" and Chelsea Oswald of Ohio in the 5000 meter run at 17:03.82. A freshmen national record was set by the race runner-up to Oswlald, Samantha Nadel from North Shore High School of New York in 17:15.38. Oswald executed her race plan to a T. She sat back early and let everyone else set the pace, and when it was time to go she had plenty left in the tank as she accelerated over the last mile to easily pull away from the field. Oswald said "I set a new PR. I didn't know I could run that fast."

Only two events are being contested on Friday at the Nike Indoor Nationals as the meet has extended from its usual Saturday-Sunday two day format to accomodate the weight throw and 5000 meter run. The weight throw has stacked fields with the US leaders for both boys and girls and many of the US top 10 performances also present. Meanwhile, the 5000 meter run is definitely missing many of the considered elite distance runners in the country, but will be a good opportunity for a next tier of runners to step up and become Nike national champions.
Pictured right: Chelsea Oswald of Ohio, a Foot Locker finalist this past fall, is one of several contenders in a fairly wide open girls 5000 meter race on Thursday evening at the Reggie Lewis Center.

While many states have finished their indoor season and their athletes are either preparing for the two indoor national meets this weekend or the outdoor season, Indiana just got started with their indoor season as a more than a handful of meets were held this past weekend across the Hoosier State. Top performances at this weekend's Indiana high school meets included a US #7 mark of 45'7.50" in the shot put by Kyla Buckley of North Central and a 15'7" clearance by Corey Shank of Northrop High School in the pole vault.
The field events had many of the top performances at the Wyoming State Indoor T&F Championships held in Laramie on Saturday.
The boys' pole vault was a deep competition with five vaulters over 14'6" including a pair from Cody High School both clearing 15 feet in Landon Blanchard and Hayden Bales with Bales as the event champion. The Cody girls vaulters also dominated the event with a 1-2 finish from Betsey Whisonant (11'9") and Anna Bales (11'0") with Whisonant setting a new meet record. Whisonant, third in the high jump, saw teammate Cate Brus clear a new meet record height of 5'6.25" in the high jump.
Sheridan High School's Boomer McLaughlin successsfully cleared 6'9" in the high jump to break the state meet record by four inches. McLaughlin joins only 13 others in the nation who went as high as 6'9" this indoor season.
The Campbell County boys (106 pts) and Cheyenne Central girls (115 pts) were the state team champions. Jack Whitt, the US indoor leader in the pole vault, kicked off his outdoor season at the Putnam City Invitational with an outstanding personal best clearance of 17'10.75". The Norman High School North senior from Oklahoma had a previous best of 17'2" in the event, so it was a significant improvement as his clearance this weekend ranks US #7 on the high school outdoor all-time list. Whitt then made attempts over at the national record height of 18'3" held by Tommy Skipper, but was unsuccessful at 18'3.25".
However, a great start for Whitt who is skipping both of indoor national meets, but has big goals for this spring as indicated in his recent interview article with MileSplit US.
The New York girls showed up the New York boys as the performances in the second half of the New York State Indoor Championships have been quite impressive with two US #1 performances and a freshmen national record. Lancaster's Melissa Kurzdorfer was the current US leader in the shot put and went ahead to improve her season best in the event at Cornell with a big throw of 48'2.25". Kurdorfer, a junior, is now a three-time New York indoor state champion in the event.
The girls distance races have been stellar today as well in Ithaca. Roslyn junior Emily Lipari, the current US leader in the 3K at 9:50, became the nation's fastest at 1500 meters as well with a 4:32.59 victory. 1500 runner-up Shelby Greany of Suffern was just three seconds off Lipari's US #1 time in the 3K as she kicked it in for a strong 9:53 win.
A rising star is found at Colonie High School in freshmen Kyle Plante (pictured left by Tim Fulton) as she defeated a strong field in the 300 meter dash including previous US #3 performer Chamique Francis with a US #2 38.53 performance. More impressively, her time shattered the high school freshmen national record in the event. More...

Oklahoma’s Jack Whitt hasn’t experienced too many setbacks in his brief career as a high school pole-vaulter.
But there was one that occurred last summer for the senior from Norman North High School. Ranked No. 3 at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, held on June 19, Whitt fell far short of his then-personal best of 16 feet, 9 inches with a leap of 15-2, a performance that tied him for eighth overall.
“It was a long, 18-hour drive with my dad to begin with,” recalled Whitt, about the meet, which took place at North Carolina A&T University. “When the meet started, we had a tailwind and then it switched to a (headwind) and sometimes crosswind. I was not used to jumping in those conditions, and just didn’t have a good meet.”
Since that performance at the Nike meet, things have been looking nothing but up for one of the Sooner State’s finest prep athletes.
The New England Indoor Championships will be held on Friday, March 6th at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The meet will gather top athletes and relays from Massachussetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
The 2 mile races will feature two of the nation's best in Andrew Springer of Rhode Island and Emily Jones of Massachusetts. Jones ran a US #1 10:29 2 mile last weekend at the Massachussetts State Meet, while Springer has been the US leader in the 3K since early season at 8:27.
Daundre Barnaby dominated the Connecticut State Meet a few weeks ago winning several events and will attempt to do the same at the regional level as the Weaver High School senior is the top seed in the 600 (1:20.29) and 300 (34.10) meter dashes and likely will be featured on the top seeded 4x400. Some years ago, Track Eastern Carolina Coach “Big Dave” Simpson felt that having kids under 13 in his club was too much like running a day care. Odds are he’ll be singing a different tune next weekend.
A former teammate told Simpson of 12-year-old twins Anthony and Andrew Hendrix who were running 2:15 halves at the local recreation center. At about that time, Simpson ran into Nicholas Sparks training his son Miles on the oval. Soon thereafter, young Fuquawn Greene was in also in the picture. Something was brewing in New Bern, N.C.
But that was five years ago. Now heading up what is possibly the most talked about indoor team in the nation, Simpson is days away from taking these New Bern High School boys on a mission to break records at the 2009 Nike Indoor Nationals. That’s right – the focus in Boston on March 14 and 15 is not just to win – but to set a new standard. Read more...
The MITS State Championships held at Central Michigan University this past weekend had more than a handful of US top 10 performances led by two US #2's with Foot Locker Nationals 3rd place finisher Megan Goethals clocking a 3200 time of 10:33.81, while Ariel Roberts tied several others with the nation's #2 clearance in the high jump at 5'9". The Rochester junior Goethals just missed the meet record, while Roberts was a repeat champion in the high jump.
Tommy Brinn, a senior from Otsego High School and one of the top returning half milers in the country, dominated the 800 meter run with a four second margin of victory in his US #7 1:54.65.
The boys' throwing events had some impressive marks thanks to two athletes in Allendale senior Zack Hill and Saline senior Quinn Dawson. The two throwers split victories in the shot put and weight throw with Hill as the shot put winner in a US #8 61'9", while Dawson put up a US #10 66'4.75" in the weight throw.
It was a close finish for the girls 60 meter hurdles title as two US top 10 performances were produced from champion Christienne Linton (US #5 8.61) and runner-up Bridgette Owens-Mitchell (US #7 8.64).
Chris Jimmerson of Okemos and Bradley James of Haslett put on a thrilling show for fans in the high jump with both clearing a US #5 height of 6'10". Earlier misses gave first place to the senior Jimmerson.

In Illinois at the Proviso West Invitational, several solid performances were recorded in the boys events. 2008 World Juniors team member Dan Block of Lake Park had a solid mark in the shot over 60 feet at US #9 61'0.50", despite following his other attempts.
Danny Pawola of Neuqua Valley checked in with a time in the 3200 meter run which put him just outside of the US top 10 with his 9:15.50 victory. Pawola ran a fairly even race with a 4:38 split at 1600 meters. Neuqua Valley also won the 4x800 meter relay over York High School in a time of 8:11.
Russell Petty of Naperville Central had a successful clearance of 6'9" to win the high jump easily and the football star also picked up first place finishes in the long jump and triple jump to sweep the jumping events.

The Louie Bing Classic is always a star studded affair for the short stuff and the jumps and that's basically because Miami teams typically dominate these events and all the big guns come out for it. This year was no exception and our leaderboard of a week's worth of state rankings was completely rewritten by this meet for just about every event 800 meters and shorter, boys and girls.
Last year's much lauded middle school sensation Robin Reynolds officially became a freshman phenom, opening her high school career with Miami Jackson. She earned three golds and a bronze in the two-day meet.
