  • VHSL Group AA State Championships Coverage

Distance is the ticket to a state team title in Group AA! Tyler Stutzman had a Peter Dorrell-esque triple in the distance events at the 2009 Group AA State Championships in breaking Dorrell's meet record in the 3200 on Friday (9:10.03) and then bouncing back from an upset defeat in the 1600 to Turner Ashby's Alex Ott (4:13.76) in third place (4:15.94) behind teammate Kyle Satterwhite's PR run for second (4:15.8) to battle Blacksburg's Brian Hencke to the line for a narrow margin of victory in the 800 of one hundredth of a second in a 1:53.93 win. Westerm Albemarle boys would claim the team title as the result of Stutzman's epic triple as well as points from Satterwhite and other team mates. (Photo by John Herzog)   It was only fitting it would be the two twins from Blacksburg in Joanna and Kathleen Stevens battling each other to the line to decide who would be the fastest in the household for the day as well as the Group AA 1600 meter state champion with Joanna as the winner at 5:05.37 and Kathleen as the close runner-up at 5:05.53. It would be Joanna's second individual title in the meet after winning the 3200 meter run on Friday night in 10:55.48. Also on Friday, Kathleen ran on the victorious 4x800 meter relay in a strong time of 9:26.47 without featuring one of their top legs in sister Joanna. Blacksburg girls ended up tallying 52 points a whole to claim the Group AA state outdoor title. (Photo by John Herzog) Congratulations to the Western Albemarle boys and Blacksburg girls on winning the Group AA state outdoor track team titles on Saturday at Harrisonburg High School.More to come from Harrisonburg including photos, meet summary, and interviews.   VHSL Group AA State Championships - Complete Results   VHSL Group AA State Championships - 94 MileSplit US National Elites   VHSL Group AA State Championships Photo Gallery (Saturday Only) by John Herzog - 1,149 photos total.

  • Shelby Greany takes down USR in steeplechase

Photo by Tim Fulton Shelby Greany, a senior at Suffern High School in New York, took down Marie Lawrence's high school national record in the 2K steeplechase on Monday at the Cornwall Steeplefest with a 6:33.7 hand-timed performance. The steeplechase is an event which even the experienced steeplechasers start off a little rusty in their first races of the season, so the 2009 event debut for the defending Nike Outdoor Nationals champion makes the possibilities for her own steeplechase record to drop even further this spring. US #1 times were produced in both races as Colin Seidl, a 9:44 two miler from Sullivan West (NY), won the boys 3K steeplechase race in 9:25.2.
