Feinstein didn’t attend Sandy Hook as a youth, but he has familiarity with the school. His mom, Laura, is a teacher there. Fortunately, she was one of the lucky ones that survived the massacre.
Over the years, we've seen a great deal written by college coaches, high school coaches, and "experts" about the best way to be recruited into a collegiate track and field and/ or cross country program. The truth is, there is no perfect way to do it, every athlete and coach will have a different set of expectations they are looking for, and even if a kid does everything right, he or she still simply has to be good enough to make it happen. I've compiled 10 pieces of advice, taken from conversations with various local and national college coaches from all levels and divisions. I'm no expert, and athletes can take my advice or leave it, but these are straight from the horses' mouths, so feel free to heed the call, and good luck!
In this original holiday comedy short, MileSplit multimedia producer Todd Grasley is feeling sorry for himself, bummed about interviews he missed at the Bowerman Awards, and wishes he never took the job covering track & field. He is wisked into a land of "what if" by ridiculously over-acted guardian angel Clarence and reminded of the impact on the world one man can make. Beware the skit is purposefully incredibly over-the-top and corny, you will probably either think it is hillarious or wish you had the five minutes of your life back.
Jacob Burcham, a senior distance standout at Cabell Midland High School in Ona, WV, has made a commitment to run cross-country / track & field at the University of Oklahoma. Burcham will join fellow West Virginians, Brandon Doughty (class of 2011) and Eric Graff (class of 2012) of Jefferson High School / Shenandoah Junction, WV as Sooner teammates!
With a nation reeling, the track & field team from Newtown's sister city in Connecticut ran at The Armory on Saturday night. Senior Michael Leone was wearing his Danbury jersey, but was "running for Newtown." (via Armory Track)
Where do I even begin? What an absolutely amazing experience. After a long seven hours of air time I finally arrived in San Diego with many other runners from across the nation. The first thing they give you is a giant bag full of all kids of gear and shoes from Asics. It's basically an early Christmas! The whole time you are treated like royalty.
Sean McGorty, far and away the top cross-country runner in the region, made a verbal commitment to Stanford on Sunday. The Chantilly senior was one of the nation’s most coveted recruits, drawing... (via Washington Post)
Tippecanoe senior, Sam Wharton, has decided to take his academic and athleitc talents to "The Farm" and become a Stanford Cardinal. Wharton had a stunning senior cross country season in which he won both the OHSAA Division 1 State Championship and the Nike Cross Nationals Championship, while finishing 6th at Foot Locker Nationals. Wharton also finished second at the 2012 OHSAA Division 1 Track and Field Championship in the 3200m with a personal best time of 9:01.24.
One of the strengths this fall for young prodigy Anna Rohrer has been her growing ability and commitment to be prepared for anything in a race and readiness to make adjustments on the fly. (Photo by Don Rich)
Cheserek added to the history of Foot Locker by repeating as champion for the 2nd straight year. Rohrer wins as a sophomore, using her tremendous talent to overcome veteran savvy. (Photo by Margot Kelly)
Heading into Saturday's Foot Locker Cross Country Championships, many of the qualifiers have compiled a treasure trove of starting line time in the nation's most prestigious season-ending races. Thanks to their performances in Charlotte and Kenosha, a dozen Foot Locker Finalists from the South and Midwest are competing with the nation's best for the second time in eight days.
Twelve months ago, St. Benedict’s (Newark, N.J.) junior Edward Cheserek was bound for San Diego atop a towering wave of momentum that would dwarf any surfers’ swells from the nearby Pacific Ocean. Coming into the Foot Locker Finals, he had smashed seven course records during a season for the ages, including becoming the first under 12:00 at Van Cortlandt (Eastern States), taking down Joe Rosa’s Holmdel Park record in Jersey, and a host of others. Hello all, it's Alex Riba again for the first time since the beginning of the season to talk about NXN. Boy was it quite the experience. One of my goals since freshman year was to make it to NXN so going into the regional race I only had a top five finish in mind so winning it was quite the pleasant surprise.
Back to sunny San Diego we go! While you wait check out the profiles of the 40 qualifiers who will make this epic journey together. (Photo by Aaron Rich)
The afternoon of October 20, 1981, was sunny and breezy, 60 degrees at Montgomery County Community College. The teenager out there running was a future two-time Olympic 800-meter medalist - the best middle-distance runner this area has ever produced. This 17-year-old had a resting heart rate that day of 62. Her left foot hurt her sometimes in the front "near the toes," but only when she walked, not running. The girls of Fayetteville-Manlius (N.Y.), known as Manlius XC here, came into Saturday’s Nike Cross Nationals girls’ championship race in Portland with six consecutive titles under their belt. Yet, there were questions. F-M had, at the Eastern States Championships in October, been beaten for the first time in any meet in six years (by Tatnall DE) – though F-M had been without its #1 Jillian Fanning. Would they finally relinquish the NXN crown? Who would beat them?

The Nike Cross Nationals finally crowned its first two-time boys’ national champion Saturday. But it wasn’t those 2011 titlists that had ruled in record fashion all fall long – from North Carolina to New York – and had been favored, despite nearly stumbling last weekend in their regional.
