There are no actual sectional meets this week, but around this time next year, there will be a much different look to Virginia high school track & field as a new grouping of teams will compete against one another in the final qualifier meet before the state championship track meets. Using the MileStat.com database and the virtual meet preview feature of this outdoor season's stats, we can take a hypothetical look at those 12 sectional meets will look like within the new 6 classification system to be implemented for the 2013-2014 school year.

Regional rankings for Central Region, Eastern Region, Northern Region, and Northwest Region in Group AAA based on performances in the MileStat.com database as of May 20th. Two of the state's best quarters milers finally battled it out for the first time this spring in the 400 meter dash finals at the Southeastern District Championships on Saturday between Oscar Smith's Michael Cherry and Western Branch's Byron Robinson. The Penn State bound Robinson, who is also the state leader in the 300 hurdles at 37.17, lowered his 400 meter dash personal best time down to 47.53. However, the defending New Balance outdoor and indoor nationals 400 meter champion Cherry was even faster with a season best and US #3 clocking of 46.64 for the decisive victory.

Regional rankings for Region I, Region II, Region III, and Region IV in Group A based on performances in the MileStat.com database as of May 20th. In the Seminole District last week, two of Group AA's best sprinters in Zakiya Bateman of E.C. Glass and Latrice Morris of Heritage faced off twice among many encounters that they have had with one another this season and many previous ones. The sophomore Morris is the current Group AA leader in the 100 (12.07) and 200 meter dash (24.66), but the junior Bateman was able to defeat Morris in both races at the district championships, while the runner-up Morris won the 400 meter dash in between the two races. Bateman and Morris will have plenty of more head-to-head races coming up at the Region III and VHSL Group AA State championship meets.

Regional rankings for Region A, Region B, Region C, and Region D in Group A based on performances in the MileStat.com database as of May 20th. Justin Bauserman of Central (Woodstock) is currently out in front and leading all hurdlers in Group A in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles with season best times of 15.01 and 39.46 respectively. Bauserman is the defending Group A state champion in the 300 meter hurdles and looking to add a 110 high hurdles title as well this spring.

Before the rain storm rolled in stopping the meet among 5 Bay Rivers District schools at York High School on Wednesday afternoon, the Grafton distance girls were able to roll out fast times in the 1600 meter run. Three key members of Grafton's state meet podium finishing cross country squad from this fall (a breakthrough performance for a Region I team) in Rachel Rabbitt, Nicole Goff, and Rachel Bloxom were able to all push each other to personal best times across the board in the five team regular season district meet with Rabbitt as the 1600 race winner at 5:05.38, Goff in second place at 5:09.56, and Bloxom in third place at 5:12. Grafton currently has the second fastest 4x800 meter relay team in Group AA featuring the three runners after posting a school record time of 9:41 at the MileStat.com Elite Track Classic in late April (relay pictured above).

Virtual meet girls rankings for each district in Group AA based on performances in the database as of May 8th. Younique Morgan of Brunswick has continued her dominance from indoor when she won the Group AA state indoor title in the shot put into this outdoor season. Morgan threw for a personal best mark of 40'9" earlier this season and last competed at the Lee-Davis Invitational, which she won over a large field with a mark of 38'9".

Virtual meet boys rankings for each district in Group AA based on performances in the database as of May 8th. Amherst County's Sydney Sandidge (pictured by Andrew Kicinski) is one of the few quarter milers in the state to have dipped under 49 seconds this spring as his 48.80 season best ranks him first in Group AA. The indoor 300 meter state champion Sandidge has also clocked a 200 meter personal best of 21.91 this season and won at several big invitationals over the past four to five weeks including a 49.08 clocking in the 400 at the Joe Curcio Classic two weeks ago in Lynchburg.

A interesting blend of meets this weekend with the featured meet being the finals only under the lights elite meet at Sports Backers Stadium in the Southern Track Classic on Friday, while also found across the state this weekend you will find many last chance meets for teams and athletes trying to achieve championship meet qualifying performances as well several JV invitationals for nice season closers for underclassmen and developing athletes. Championship season is also technically underway with some district championships being held early this week and weekend and conference championships for private schools being contested as well.

District virtual meet rankings for the Northwest Region based on performances in the database as of May 8th. Osbourn Park junior distance runner Nick Causey has been on fire as of late. After winning the 1600 meter run at the Bishop McNamara Invitational several weeks ago in a big personal best effort of 4:17, Causey defeated the New Balance Indoor Nationals 800 meter champion Nathan Kiley of Westfield along with Group AAA state indoor 3200 champ Louis Colson of Thomas Edison at the Nike Spring Invitaitonal in the 800 meter run with another huge PR drop in a 1:53.35 victory.

District virtual meet rankings for the Northern Region based on performances in the database as of May 8th. The South County and Lake Braddock girls are clearly the top two teams in the Northern Region and arguably the state from the Patriot District, but there is a pack of formidable squads giving chase behind them in the Northern Region include Concorde District's James Robinson. Macey Schweikert is one of their top individuals for Robinson as she can score and place high in all three distance races at the district, regional, and state level with her season bests of 2:15 in the 800, 4:58 in the 1600, and 11:05 in the 3200.

The Western Branch boys are looking formidable for the championship season stretch in particular with their relays and hurdles with Aaron Simpson and Byron Robinson both being highly ranked in the 110 and 300 meter hurdles as well as having the state leading 4x400 meter relay at 3:18 and a sub 8 minute 4x800 meter relay.

Virtual meet rankings for each district in the Central Region according to performances in the database as of May 8th. The Cosby girls have been dominant in the Central Region for the past few years, but right there with them have been the Patrick Henry girls who are looking in great position to regain the Central Region title led by a strong core of athletes including thrower Shania Williams. Williams threw for two PR's this past weekend at the Dogwood Track Classic with a first place in shot put at 42'4.50" and a third place in the discus at 121'0".

An extended lightning delay starting at 6:20 PM forced the remaining events (some field events and running events starting with the girls 400 and beyond) to be reschedule to Wednesday, May 8th at a new location at Norfolk Academy. MileStat.com was on-site with coverage for Tuesday's portion of the meet at CNU, but can't confirm right now that we will be on-site for the day two rescheduled portion of the meet on Wednesday at Norfolk Academy.

Henrico's LaChyna Roe recorded one of the best marks in state history for an underclassmen in the triple jump with her remarkable leap of 40'1" to break the event meet record at the historic Dogwood Track Classic. Only three girls in state history have went farther as sophomores with Yolanda Thompson of West Potomac holding the sophomore class state record at 40'4" from 1997.

Despite the Penn Relays usually being a difficult meet to vault well at as winds at Franklin Field are typically constant on an annual basis, Fluvanna County junior Hannah Meador was able to clear a season best and state leading height of 12'1.50" to place third against some of the top vaulters on the East Coast. Last year on this weekend, the Colonial Forge Showcase turned out to be the best meet of the weekend ranked based soley on the number of elite performances, despite only being in its second year of existence. With the Dogwood Track Classic at the University of Virginia moving from its traditional date of the last weekend in April to the first weekend of May, will one of the state's most storied high school outdoor invitationals find this date equally as ideal to draw plenty of the state's top talent to Lannigan Field? With the warmer weather as we get later into the spring season, more opportunities to host Friday night meets as a handful of meets will see either all of their events or a good portion contested when the sun starts to set or disappears for the night on Friday. This weekend is one of the final weekends to improve championship season qualifying times and achieve those state qualifiers in meets with 10 schools or more.
Performance lists for this busy weekend of over a dozen invitationals throughout the state of Virginia will be posted below as soon as they are submitted by the meet directors and/or timers.

After a year hiatus following a nasty storm in the 2011 edition of the meet which caused the vast majority of the meet's events to be cancelled, the MileStat.com Elite Track Gala will be making its triumphant return as an excellent post-season opportunity and option for high school athletes in Virginia and beyond our state borders to continue or end their outdoor track seasons.

Emma Nowak doesn't get the opportunity to race in too many major weekend invitatiationals at Osbourn High School to push her to faster times, so the University of Richmond recruit often has to make the best of the competition and atmosphere found in the smaller weekday meets. On Wednesday in a Cedar Run District tri meet at Broad Run High School, Nowak put together a strong double in the distance races with a 5:09 1600 and 11:17 3200.

With only one day left until the entry deadline (closes online at 5 PM on Wednesday, May 1st) for the 2013 Southern Track Classic, Patrick Joseph is making a run at something that has never been done. A double watch night in the hardest double in the state. A Southern Classic Mile/800 double win has never been pulled off. Ever. The closest was 1999 when Kevin Rhue of Princess Anne went 4:14 for the win but was edged by Male H.S. (KY) and Track & Field News poster boy Sydney Doaty in the 800. Joseph has the credentials that indicate the possibility exists.

A list of the top 50 high school freshmen boys in the state of Virginia in each outdoor track & field event as of April 30th. The Lyles brothers (pictured by Ryan Kelly) of T.C. Williams have really emerged as two of the state's top young sprinters this spring with Noah Lyles as the fastest freshmen in the Commonwealth in the 100 (10.91) and 200 (21.62), while brother Joseph Lyles is the best currently at the 400 with a 49.88 season best.

The Westfield boys nearly pulled it off and almost became repeat Championships of America winners in the 4x800 meter relay. After running a 7:47 qualifying time for Saturday's finals in front of the biggest crowds of the weekend at the Penn Relays. The foursome of Max Chambers, Jeff Edmondson, Troy Sevachko, and Nathan Kiley for Westfield came to race in a title defense attempt and battled it out in a classic duel with New Jersey's Pleasantville High School.

Penn Relays has a lot of history. For any athlete to break any meet record at the 119th annual event is quite a few considering how many great athletes converge on Franklin Field every April. Chantilly senior Sean McGorty etched himself in the meet record books with a race performance of epicness. Leading wire to wire and closing with a 59.5 last quarter, McGorty ran a new national leading time and broke the high school mile race record at Penn with a 4:04.57 victory against a top caliber field. More to come on McGorty's race as well as other Virginians performances on Friday and Saturday following the completion of hosting the MileStat.com Track Classic this weekend.

MileStat.com is excited to share a last second announcement for this weekend's MileStat.com Elite Track Classic in Richmond, Virginia. The meet will have a very special guest in attendance for athletes, coaches, and spectators to get autographs from and take photos with the world record holder at two miles and 3000 meters in Daniel Komen from Kenya. Komen is the only human being ever to run back to back sub four minute miles when he established the world record in 1997 with a 7:58.61 performance at an IAAF track league meet held in Belgium.

Charlottesville's Taylor Watkins had an impressive sprint triple in a quad meet at Powhatan High School on Wednesday with hand-held times of 12.1 in the 100, 25. 1 in the 200, and 59.0 in the 400.

A list of the top 50 high school boys' performers in each outdoor track & field event in the state of Virginia as of April 23rd, 2013. No hand-held times are included for events 400 meters or less. Defending Northern Region 110 meter hurdles champion D'Aante Yarborough became the state leader in the event with a new personal best clocking of 14.34 at the Waldorft Track Classic in Maryland this past weekend. Yarborough finished fifth in last year's AAA state finals of the 110 meter hurdles, but has raced sparingly since then with Stone Bridge not having indoor track (Loudoun County schools do not offer indoor track). The lack of meets has not kept Yarborough from running fast out of the gate as he last month opened last month with a 14.54 clocking at an invitational in Pennsylvania.

De'Nisha Smith of Cosby ran a state leading time of 44.93 in the 300 meter hurdles on Wednesday in a tri meet at Midlothian with her teammate Elisa Hendriksen running a four second PR for runner-up and MileSplit US national elite time of 46.12. It was an impressive return to top form for Smith (43.61 PR last year) was setback by injury in the last half of the indoor season.

King's Fork senior Davon Grayson (pictured by Jacqueline Justice) is a newcomer to the state leaderboard after he improved upon his previous personal best by a remarkable two foot distance in the long jump with his winning leap of 23'4" at the Atlantic Coast Spring Break Invitational in Suffolk this past weekend. Battlefield's Galissia Cause improved upon her state leading mark in the shot put with a personal best mark of 43'10" at the Running Store City-County Championships. The 2013 Group AAA state indoor shot put champion Cause is currently four feet better than the next best performer in Virginia in the shot put at this point of the outdoor season. Deep Run sophomore Matthew Novak (pictured by Jeff Adams) may have been the state's only high school competitor at this weekend's Florida Relays, but being the lone wolf from Virginia appeared to work with his breakthrough victory and personal best time of 4:16.06 to win the invitational 1600 meter run on Friday in Gainesville.

Felecia Majors and the rest of her South County teammates traveled southbound this past weekend while on spring break to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and competed in the Beach Run Invitational. It turned out that Majors and South County were not only on vacation time while down in Myrtle Beach, but getting fast times as well. Majors dominated the meet in numerous events just like she does almost every weekend back home in Virginia including wins in the pole vault (11'0") and long jump (19'6"), but in particular, Majors really took it up a notch on the track with the fastest performances that we have ever seen from her.

University of Virginia recruit Micah Brickhill isn't waiting to mix it up with the next level of runners found in college. The Liberty Christian Academy senior Brickhill has started her outdoor season racing unattached in two college meets as she raced at the Raleigh Relays in the 400 meter dash last weekend and then raced the 800 meter run at the Liberty Collegiate Invitational this past Saturday. Brickhill finished fourth in the race (which had two under 2:10) to help pull her along to a new personal best 800 meter time of 2:14.39, which makes her easily the state leader in the middle distance event at this point of the young outdoor season.

The state of Pennsylvania ruled the high school DMR races on Friday at William & Mary with the LaSalle College boys picking up the W with a fine time of 10:17, while Germantown Friends were the girls winners at 12:11.54. However, there were some impressive splits among the Virginia girls' squads including a 3:47 lead-off 1200 meter leg for Grafton's Nicole Goff. Other notable splits included a 2:18 800 split from Mountain View's Jean Rouse as well as a 5:08 1600 PR for Megan Rebholz of Colonial Forge to help her team likely qualify for the Penn Relays in the event in third place at 12:29.

After his twin brother Josephus Lyles was able to surprise in winning the blue division boys 400 from a slow section in 51.04 earlier, Noah Lyles of T.C. Williams followed his brother in the element of surprise in coming out strong on the turn from lane 1 to stun the higher seeded favorites in the center lanes and run away with the 200 meter dash victory in a 21.62 personal best clocking. The Woodbridge girls were able to edge out Forest Park by a mere 1/4 of a point to claim the Prince William county title at the Running Store Championship meet held at Patriot High School in Nokesville. Their 4x400 meter relay, which ran the state's second fastest time ever indoors at the indoor nationals last month, saved the day at meet's end with a state leading time of 3:57.89 to win the event.

The Westfield boys team may have been missing their top athlete in New Balance Indoor Nationals 800 meter champion Nathan Kiley at the Carolyn Legard Relays as he recovers from his hamstring injury suffered at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invite, but their relays seemed to be doing just fine without him on Saturday at W.T. Woodson High School with victories in the 4x1600 (18:23.53), 1600 sprint medley relay (3:36.75), and 4x400 meter relay (3:29.27). Western Branch senior and Penn State University recruit Byron Robinson (Photo by Jacqueline Justice) clocked a a US #1 time of 53.45 in the 400 meter hurdles on day one of the Atlantic Coast Spring Break Invitational in Suffolk, Virginia. Coming off an indoor season with best times of 1:04.37 in the 500 meter dash and 34.32 in the 300 meter dash, Robinson was pushed to the national leading time by Booker T. Washington's Rodney Johnson, who had a runner-up performance of 54.01, which ranks him #3 in the nation currently.

Javanique Burruss jumpstarted her outdoor season with three victories for the Louisa County senior at the Woodberry Forest Invitational. The University of South Carolina recruit Burruss (pictured by Andrew Kicinski) leaped for the best marks of the day in the long jump (18'11.50") and triple jump (36'2"), while swiftly taking care of the competition in the 100 meter hurdles with a 15.03 clocking.

Midlothian's Alice Babashak (pictured by Tom Veazey) had a stellar meet at the first annual Glen Allen Invitational as she swept the hurdles with PR's across the board in not only her victories in the 100 meter hurdles (15.04) and 300 meter hurdles (45.24), but also well as in the 200 meter dash (3rd, 26.43) and triple jump (4th, 34'6"). Big improvements for Babashak in her first outdoor meet of the season after having season bests of 15.60 in the 100 meter hurdles and 46.80 in the 300 meter hurdles last spring.

The River Ridge District has been a great pipeline of great female distance runners over the years and another young star is in line to continue that line of talent in Christiansburg freshmen Mikayla Richardson. Richardson (pictured by Andrew Kicinski) led the Christiansburg cross country team in the fall with a 7th place finish in the Group AA state race and was All-State indoors in the 500 meter dash (8th place). The 800 appears to be her event this spring as she opened with a 2:23 runner-up finish to Katie Fortner at the Knights Track Classic last weekend before winning the 400 meter dash (1:02.09) this past weekend at Abingdon High School for the Falcon T&F Challenge.

Fifth and sixth place respectively in the 2012 Group A State Outdoor Championships in the shot put and discus, Alexis Brown (pictured by Andrew Kicinski) of James River (Buchanan) appears ready to make that jump or throw in this case this spring to compete for a state title. Last spring's Group AA state discus throw runner-up Justin Neff (photo by Andrew Kicinski) of Millbrook opened up his outdoor season with a mark of 150'8" at the Ram Country Invitational on Saturday in Strasburg. Neff started off his high school career at Sherando before moving to cross town school Millbrok for his junior year, which culminated with a personal best throw of 155'0" to become the state runner-up in the discus last June at the 2012 Group AA State Meet in Harrisonburg.

Matthew Zajac of E.C. Glass improved upon his state leading mark in the discus with a monster PR throw of 186'4" at the E.C. Glass Throwdown, which ranks him #4 in the United States currently and also moves him to #8 all-time in Virginia high school history. Zajac moves ahead of his older brother Michael and his high school PR of 185'2".

Two of the Northern Region's fastest in Ayo Raymond of James Robinson and Michael Thomas-Brown of Mount Vernon got an early season opportunity to face off twice in the same meet in the 100 and 200 meter dash at the Leslie Sherman Memorial Invitational during their spring break. Raymond got the better of Thomas-Brown in the 100 meter dash as he pulled away decisively in the final 15 meters or so for a meet record clocking of 10.98, while Thomas-Brown was able to even the score later in a photo finish as only one hundredth of a second separated him (22.23) from his regional rival Raymond (22.24) with both under the previous meet record.

It was certainly a Good Friday for Virginian distance runners at the Raleigh Relays in the elite invitational 3200 meter high school races held in the midst of the big college meet at NC State University. Lafayette senior Kurtis Steck had an incredible race to run a personal best 3200 meter time by 12 seconds to win a loaded race with many of North Carolina's best distance runners in a time of 9:08.49.

Douglas Freeman sophomore MacKenzie Kerr was trying out for the school soccer team early last spring when she saw her indoor track teammates training for the upcoming indoor state championships, which she missed out on qualifying after having a subpar regional meet at the Ashe Center as an inexperienced freshmen. She felt like she was missing out and soon gave up her sport since as a young child in soccer to re-join her track teammates for the outdoor season.

Oscar Smith senior Michael Cherry is now a two-time national champion at 400 meters and six-time Group AAA state champion in track after an indoor season season which saw him establish state records in the 400 (46.87) and 500 (1:02.61) and break the national record in the 300 (33.05).

A list of the top returning individuals in each event among Northwest Region Region schools from last year's outdoor season and links to full returnees rankings lists in each event. Kiana Hairston leads the Osbourn Park girls squad as the region's fastest returning sprinter in the 100 (12.04) and 200 (25.14) meter dash. This past indoor season, Hairston won the Northwest Region 55 meter dash title in a 7.15 personal best clocking, while also dipping under 41 seconds in the 300 meter dash.
