MIleSplit NY - With championship season on the horizon, the track fan in all of us is already putting together our hopes and wishes for the state meet. Fast times and great races are always a highlight at the conclusion of a years worth of training. This Tuesday, we give you our top ten picks of the races that could be. As always, all events are made up from the leaderboards, and in no way represent what athletes may or may not actually run at their State Qualifier. Also, they have to make it past their State Qualifier first, which is a bigger test for some rather than others. But still, here are our (hypothetical) picks.

2 Weeks Ago - News

10. Boys 3000m Steeplechase
State Standard: 9:42.0/9:42.24
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 18
Comment - It would seem the longer the distance, the harder it is to qualify. Throw a couple of barriers in the way, and you have a standard not commonly hit, partly because not every facility can afford the water pit.
9 - Girls Shot Put
State Standard: 38-03
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 17
Comment - This mark may not last as that hard to get, as we already have 8 people who have passed the mark in 2013. But it seems that the golden standard for shot is just out of reach for most, as lowering it an inch adds multitudes of talent.
8 - Boys 3200m
State Standard: 9:20.5/9:20.74
Number of Qualifiers in 2012- 16
Comment - Averaging 4:40 miles, twice in a row seems to be a difficult task for the xc-heavy state of New York. With only 4 people in the last five years actually breaking 9-min (Thomas Awad did it via 2-mile conversion last year), the 3200m is a tough battle to face.
7 - Boys 4x100m
State Standard: 42.8/43.04
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 15
Comment - One of the only sprint marks on our list, the 4x100m is one of the most techinical running events on the oval. With nearly a quarter of the race run in exchange zones, anything can happen on the handoff.
6 - Boys 1600m
State Standard: 4:16.5/4:16.74
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 14
Comment - We had nine athletes under this mark indoors, and six already outdoors, indicating this number may be another that is getting more attention.
5 - Girls 4x400m
State Standard: 3:56.6/3:56.84
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13
Comment - Finding four girls on a team under 60secs is never easy, and only thirteen teams managed to accomplish it last year. The number of qualifiers may actually go down this year, as some of the top teams have yet to show their dominance has returned from last year.
4 - Girls 3000m
State Standard: 10:03.0/10:03.24
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13
Comment - A little slower when compared to the male equivalent standard (9:20 (B) is about 10flat (G)), but it seems to be more difficult to break. We've got seven under already, with only three coming from the Glavin, which was a field specifically set to break 10:00.00
3 - Boys 3200m
State Standard: 9:20.5/9:20.74
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 13
Comment -
2 - Girls 2000m Steeplechase
State Standard: 7:05.3/7:05.54
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 11
Comment -
1 - Girls 1500m
State Standard: 4:36.9/4:37.14
Number of Qualifiers in 2012 - 11
Comment -

Overview: To some, winning a Penn Relays Gold Watch is a goal just as, and even sometimes moreso important than winning a national championship. Watches are awarded only to the overall American winners in Championship of America events at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, kicking off for the 119th time this Thursday at Franklin Field. In some cases, most notably the sprints, it is harder to win a spot on the top of the medal stand than it is to win a national championship. This fact is because of the international draw the relays bring to Philly; currently, there are 62 schools registered that are not from the United States, with Jamaica the most represented foreign country with 32 individual schools. For some, winning a watch means beating the world.

MileSplit NY - It is the age-old debate, which has been going on longer than our website has even been around: Are our State Qualification methods fair? It's a topic that arose again after an April Fool's joke stirred conversation in the message boards. Looking around the message boards of other states, many have the same complaints. As someone who has coached in both large and small schools, both upstate and downstate, I can relatively see both sides of the argument. I encourage debate, and implore opinions to be voiced, as I believe it brings about the best discourse for change. In other words, feel free to disagree. But I would argue that the current qualifications are just fine.
Many already disagree, and they are welcome too. But there are some things to consider.

Eighteen boys broke nine minutes for 3200m at the Arcadia Invitational. Eighteen. But what’s really astounding about the amount of elite marks from Arcadia? What’s the frame of reference for eighteen? The sheer number is impressive in its own right. Now it seems we’ve entered the start of the Golden Age. Before we get too romantic over here with enlightened ideas, let’s try to remember the days when saying... (via FloTrack)

MileSplit NY - All the qualifiers are on the books, and positions are set. We'll have our extensive previews coming to you on Wednesday and Thursday as the official seeds are out, and scratches finalized. But before that, check out some of the action in New York City. The story of the day has to go to the workhorse efforts of Kadecia Baird (Medger Evers) and Sabrina Southerland (Benjamin Cardozo). Appropriately sharing the female athlete-of-the-meet awards, both ladies won two individual events and a relay. Southerland would shock top seeds Evers however, when she anchored the 4x400m in a 54.8 leg to win the longer relay. Check out all the highlights below, plus some Section 1 action from Friday night as well.

Fredonia, NY - Section 6 was in the spotlight way back when in Cross Country. It was the home to the state meet for 2012, and every team in New York State ran with the destination in mind. Now, with XC over, and results hard to come by in the Western-most Section of the Empire State, athlete's may have fallen off the radar. But don't be fooled, as the "sixers" now hold a total of four state leading marks, as well as several who can threaten for a medal at the upcoming state meet. Check them out below, and watch out for them at Cornell.

MileSplit NY - Have you had time to catch your breath yet? We still are catching up on all the records broken last night, from Section, to High School, to American. And if one thing was clear, New York was ready to represent, retaking two National leading times, and lowering two more, in addition to a new nation leading high jump from Section 5 earlier in the day. Oh, and Mary Cain ran fast as well, breaking four total records in the width of under 5-minutes. First, she lowered her career best in the full mile to 4:28.25, which breaks the American High School record, as well as the US Junior record. Likewise, Cain took out the 1500m record en route, after she split 4:11.72, which also takes down both the 1500m Indoor High School and US Junior records as well. Shockingly, the split was very close to the Outdoor record Cain had set at 4:11.01 last year, before entering the tutelage of Alberto Salazar. Crazy to think what the junior may be capable of this spring, as she looks to have only one more Indoor meet left on the docket, out in Albuquerque.

Chad Noelle, an indoor and outdoor state champion for Greene High School in New York's Section 4 has achieved the pinacle of athletic acheivement, by breaking the once unthinkable 4-minute barrier. After graduating in 2011, and heading to University of Oregon, Noelle broke the barrier from the slower section, a spot he won't be seeded in for some time to come.

It looks to be a banner week for track and field, with the inclusion of Millrose's stellar field, among new National Leading Times around the country. For this week's Tuesday Top Ten, we look at the brand that has been given to Track and Field for years: a niche sport. Hopefully the following reasons can demonstrate that that view is outdated, and we may be more mainstream than ever. Check it out below!

For the girls, Arlington's Bella Burda set a new sophomore state record in the 3000m, bested the 9:44 previously set in 1982 by Christine Curtin of Wellington Mepham, by going 9:33.90. Burda ran alone from the gun, and never let up on the pace. That same mentality followed into the boys 3200m run, as Eric Holt of Carmel set out to break 9 minutes in the longer distance. He fell just short, but went US #4 by clocking 9:09.10, which is the new state leader by over 8 seconds. Burda is now also US #3 for that distance, and NY #2 behind Mary Cain.
