Underwood to race Saturday night at the MSG

West Potomac senior Sarah Jane Underwood will be racing Saturday evening in the invitational high school mile race at the first ever USATF U.S. Open, which is a meet that has been created to replace the Millrose Games at the Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Millrose Games still exist (which 3 Virginian girls have qualified for the mile in), but have moved this year to the faster 200 meter banked track at the New York Armory on a later date. However, the USATF has stepped up to host a indoor track & field meet at the historic short banked track found within the Madison Square Garden and this new meet has many of the same events of the Millrose Games including an invitation-only high school mile race which Underwood has been selected for. The West Potomac senior has already ran a 5:09 full mile earlier this month at the Montgomery Invitational and last month ran a personal best time of 2:55.97 in the 1000 meter run. This will be Underwood's second consecutive weekend in New York City after she ran on West Potomac's 4x800 meter relay last weekend at the New Balance Games which clocked a state leading performance of 9:26.50. This event will be broadcasted on ESPN2 on January 29, 7:00-9:00 p.m.
