AAU Junior Olympics at Norfolk State University is complete!
A stellar week of performances and efficiently run meet (220+ heats of 200 dash in 2 1/2 hours) concluded today at Norfolk State University with the final day of competition at the AAU Junior Olympics. Over 30 AAU national records were set among the various age groups ranging from six and seven year olds in the primary age group to high school upperclassmen in the young men and women division. The host state of Virginia had its share of champions and All-Americans this week including the Five Star Track Club young women's 4x400 meter relay (pictured above by John Herzog) which included an "A" list of the state's top quarter milers in Monica Williams of Green Run, Shakeela Saunders of Great Bridge, Erin Edmond of Riverbend, and Kiara Porter of Tabb to win the AAU national title on Saturday in 3:43.
Bethel's William Brown was on pace to win a second AAU national title this week and run a big personal best in the 3000 meter run leading the race all the way through the last lap, but had to settle for second as he was outkicked for the win despite running a huge PR of 8:47. Brown earlier in the week won the intermediate boys 1500 in another all-time best performance of 4:03.

Athlete Spotlight: Walter Mitchell
However, racing in an especially competitive Beach District this past year with the likes of Darrell Wesh and Justin Burke made it easy for Mitchell to be overlooked with their success and state titles. Mitchell had a state title temporarily in the 4x400 meter relay, but a disqualification from an exchange zone violation quickly took it away from the Salem boys. With Wesh graduated, a talented pack of returnees will be back in 2011 to vie for bragging rights at the state's top sprinter and Mitchell is looking to step up into that spotlight. A nice springboard into his senior year could be next week's AAU Junior Olympic Games in Norfolk as the 2009 AAU intermediate boys 200 national champion will be vying for a third AAU title competing in the young men's 200 meter dash.
